Google pulls YouTube from Amazon devices, escalating spat

A rare public spat in the technology industry escalated on Tuesday when Google said it would block its video streaming application YouTube from two Amazon.com Inc devices and criticized the online retailer for not selling Google hardware.

The stakes are high: many in the technology industry expect that interacting with computers by voice will become widespread, and it is unclear if Amazon, Google or another company will dominate the space. Amazon’s suite of voice-controlled devices has outsold Google’s so far, according to a study by research firm eMarketer from earlier this year.

In a statement, Google said, ”Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make (its) Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of (our sister company) Nest’s latest products.

“Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV,” Google said. “We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.”

Amazon said in a statement, “Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website.”

It said it hoped to resolve the issue with Google as soon as possible but customers could access YouTube through the internet - not an app - on the devices in the meantime.

The break has been a long time coming. Amazon kicked the Chromecast, Google’s television player, off its retail website in 2015, along with Apple Inc’s TV player. Amazon had explained the move by saying it wanted to avoid confusing customers who might expect its Prime Video service to be available on devices sold by Amazon.

Amazon and Apple mended ties earlier this year when it was announced Prime Video would come to Apple TV. Not so with Google.

Trump is the only President who has a chance to reign in these monsters—Congress and both parties are bought and paid for already.

______________

perhaps a good job for his daughter and son in law would be to foster start ups of competing conservative companies as well as trust breaking these utilities

Google is Evil. One thing that sticks out at me is ‘NEST (our sister company)...’ - I have been wanting for a while to see ALL of the companies that Google owns - and then choose to NOT use them/buy them/stay away from them. Google is constantly extending its tentacles across the globe with monitoring and scraping all kinds of Internet access and now much more so with their Voice and other Internet-Of-Things products. All to capture what we do/say/like/feel/view/want.

Someone needs to comprise the list and broadcast it far and wide - “This is how many places Google can gather information about you with their products”

Tenticles, exactly. They’re Borg like, working hand in hand with the Swamp. The Swamp using spyware on citizens. Mad Maxine Waters told the truth.

"Exactly how are Google's actions legal? Customers purchase devices with capabilities, in this case they purchased Fire TV devices that had Google capabilities on them."

"Google turns off/removes that capability - how are these customers not financially harmed, and how is this not class-action lawsuit worthy?"

The people that bought Amazon Fire TV Sticks bought their sticks from Amazon, not Google/Youtube. Google had nothing to do with those sales. You seem to think that Google/Youtube should be required to provide its content to anyone and everyone that wants it. That's not the way things work in a free country.

Around here people and companies are free to do business with or not do business with whomever they please as long as they are not discriminating based on certain legally protected categories. I'm pretty sure that "purchaser of Amazon Fire TV Stick" is not a legally protected category.

Do you think that you have the right to force Google to do business with you against their will?

Both Amazon and Google function on policies of “Net neutrality for thee, not me”.

In a dystopian word, Alexa says, “ "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".

The Borg has our location, our habits, our travel route down. They read all of your e-mails, listen to your calls, capture every click or keystroke. They can dispatch a drone to dispatch us at anytime.

If Google becomes the holder of all knowledge, won’t they be tempted to act as the enforcers or at the arbitrators ? Imagine being brought before a Google Tribunal.

Devices with browsers can still access Youtube content.

Most users have more than one device. If access to a particular content is denied on one, they probably have alternatives, if they really, really want to watch that new cat video.

Google does seem to be shooting itself in the foot with this silliness. It reminds me of my cable company occasionally fighting with local TV stations or some networks and blocking their programming for a while. We know they will eventually settle and we know we will see a cable bill increase in the near future.

All companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple) should be banned from horizontal and vertical integration—no services provided (software) if you provide hardware.

That is an absolutely terrible idea. Do you know how many companies do that? And how crappily third-party software runs on devices? Especially very technically specific devices? Citrix software running many large companies' Citrix servers. Toyota software running Toyota vehicles. Ford vehicles. Your phone (unless it's a non-Google device running Android). Your router. Your thermostat (unless it's an old mechanical one). Your kid's Speak-N-Spell. Your fitbit. Your Nintendo 64. Your Keurig (if you're an idiot who can't make your own coffee). Your backup battery charger. Your grocery store's pos system. Streetlights.
Almost anything electronic (definitely if it has a digital display) will be vertically integrated. Hardware/software combos are everywhere.
