Decorating the tree is a fun-filled festive experience, but not if have a cat eager to climb it or dog desperate to chew on the tinsel.

Pet owners around the world have shared the extreme lengths they go to every December to pet-proof their Christmas trees.

In some households, decorative firs have to be protected by metal cages or even hung upside down from the ceiling just to keep naughty pets at bay.

But Christmas is a time for everyone - even animals - so to make sure they still have a holly jolly time, some of the spoiled pets captured here get their very own Christmas tree to ruin at their leisure.

That might have saved my grandfather, who took down the tree with him when he fell off the ladder.

Put some tobasco on the low hanging ornament’s.

It may stink for a few hours but it broke my Golden Retriever in no time.

We have 3 cats, after decorating the tree my wife lays down a 3-4 foot perimeter of tin foil around it. For whatever reason they will not walk on it.

Our cats (4 or 5) leave the tree alone.

One part Citronella oil to three parts water. Spray low branches - works for about 4 days, and then respray. Can get at Whole Foods.

The story mentions tinsel. We made that terrible mistake one time. We were lucky. The cat was able to pass the tinsel without it strangling his intestines. Well, mostly pass the tinsel. We manually extracted most of the strand from his other end. Tinsel and pets don’t mix.

My Dad used go tie the tree to the wall because our cat would climb up the trunk and then sit and peer out from the branches. When you walked by the tree he would snake his paw out to ambush you. :-)

Now if only we could convince the squirrels to leave our outdoor lights alone. Every year that we put up lights, we’d gradually watch them diminish in number until the yard went dark. Then we’d find the light chains in pieces from squirrels eating them. Why they weren’t fried we never figured out. Still trying to figure out how to protect lights.

My son’s first Christmas... he was 7 months old and wanted to do pull ups on the artificial Christmas tree and play with the decorations so I put the tree in his play pen where he couldn’t get at it...

:)
