The Boston City Council on Wednesday unanimously passed an ordinance that would seek to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags used at retail stores and other businesses throughout the city.
Mayor Martin Walsh, who must still sign the bill into law, is currently reviewing the proposal, a spokeswoman said.

Paper bags kill trees
Believe it or not there already is a law just like this one in Laredo, Texas
so if you use these bags for garbage and then throw them out ,you’ll now have to buy kitchen catchers to do the job ,D’oh ,or will they be banned as well
There is one in the entire state of California as well. Passed by counties along the coast between LA Anand SF.
Trees are a renewable resource.
These bans are based on a big lie. That the bags were single use. I always used mine 4-6 times. In CAL you can now buy thicker bags for 10 cents. So you pay the state money and get a bag which is less biodegradable. It’s just a boondoggle to increase tax revenue.
this is getting set to go country wide- apparently they woudl rather you use contaminated ‘reusable canvas pouches’ every time you shop- (which put you and your entire family at risk as they accumulate bacteria and fungus over time) and risk cross contamination-
There was a recent study showing that about 90% of all the plastic bags that end up in the ocean come from rivers in Africa and Asia. This ocean pollution is not coming from the US, but of course our local statists are happy to grab the opportunity to impose more control over us.
Anarchy is looking much better as the days go by because NOBODY gets it right. I try to accept what we are given but this is not how we were founded.
Yes, first it was that paper bags killed trees and wasted mother nature. Now plastic bags kill the environment. What next?

It is so nice not having those light weight plastic bags everywhere, stuck in trees and making a mess.
Some stores provide a heavy weight plastic bag that you can buy for 10 cents. They are actually nice and can be reused a few times.
I just keep a tote with handles in my car and it goes from the cart to that. Very easy to carry inside the house.
Having lived with the bag ban for two years, I see no problem. It is actually better, much better.
The state does not get the money. The retailer collects and keeps the 10 cents to pay for the bags. It is not a tax.
The California ban on free plastic bags is getting part of the blame for the Hepatitis A epidemic among the Homeless.
People’s Republic of California here...so now I have to buy trash bags instead of just using the super market ones. Girlfriend has to buy bags to pick up after her dog walk. I’ve never really seen the “plastic bag epidemic” that we are supposedly “curing” by this nonsense law. We really miss those bags. Just another tax on Californians. Oh, and buy the way, the government gets the revenue...they charge sales tax on the $0.10 bags. I sure could use some 100 watt incandescents too. Effing control freaks. Libtards suck!
The 10 cents goes to the store. You are correct there is sales tax on the 10 cents. I ll check my receipt for that.
Do a community clean up and deal with those bags. They are near impossible to gather up.
You won’t have that problem if you use a plastic bag liner.
There isn’t really any loose bags floating around my community. No need for a clean-up. Dog poop is a bigger problem in my neighborhood. Maybe a few of those “free” bags, left in a strategic location, might go a towards a solution, instead of being blamed for a non-problem. Why are you for banning useful items? I suspect there is something that you appreciate that would be gladly banned by some zealot. Welcome to America...the home of the free...unless someone doesn’t like your plastic bags or light bulbs.
