The Weinstein Companys Amityville: The Awakening grossed a minuscule $742 total at 10 locations on Saturday, two weeks after the haunted house sequel began streaming for free on Google Play.
Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jennifer Morrison, and Cameron Monaghan star in Amityville: The Awakening, which was directed by Franck Khalfoun from his own script. Its produced by TWCs Dimension and Blumhouse.
The original 1979 movie The Amityville Horror is based on the 1974 events at a rural house in Amityville, N.Y., which became the site of one of the deadliest hauntings and grisliest murders in American history when Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot all six members of his family. Jay Ansons book The Amityville Horror detailed a family moving into the house in 1975 and leaving a week later due to paranormal activity.
The book was adapted in 1979 by American Independent Pictures and became a hit, grossing $86 million. MGMs 2005 version earned $108 million worldwide. In Amityville: The Awakening, Thornes teenage characters family moves into the house without knowing of its notoriety, and subsequently find themselves haunted by a demonic entity.
The Weinstein Company had planned to release Amityville: The Awakening several times since last year before scrubbing the release date. It announced on Sept. 21 two weeks before the massive Harvey Weinstein scandal broke that Amityville: The Awakening would be available for free exclusively on Google Play from Oct. 12 to Nov. 8 and have a limited one-day theatrical release on Oct. 28.
TWC had no comment about the theatrical release. Heres a clip from the film that was released on Sept 20:
I’ll bet ya Bella Thorne has stories to tell.
Cue deer eating popcorn gif——cause that’s the gross, right there, LOL.
In other words, they knew it was going to be a bomb but had some contractual obligation to release it. So they released it in 10 theaters, most of which were empty, and then put it out of its misery.
Haha!
“You’re just not hitting your numbers, Harv.”
It probably did better than all the other crappy sequels / reboots
Did Malia Obama approve this movie ?
Die, Hollywood, Die!
Reboots suck. And I passed by the original Amytville house years ago. TONS of cars parked outside taking pictures. And we were told someone was living there to respect their privacy as we were being chased away by the neighborhood watch guy.
Haha. Not sure.
There ya go! Thanks!
Sounds like a direct to video/streaming release that they only put out theatrically because of some contractual obligation. 10 theaters while it’s also available on free streaming is not an attempt to make money. And there are a LOT of Amityville movies, mostly direct to video.
This film was made in 2014 and was in just 10 theaters this weekend. It has grossed over $7-million worldwide. I read the budget was very low, maybe less than $5-million, but cannot confirm that number. They may actually make a couple dollars on this movie.
