Box Office: Matt Damon And George Clooney's 'Suburbicon' Bombs With $1M Friday

DreamWorks and Universal/Comcast Corp.’s Thank You for Your Service is struggling this weekend, despite solid reviews and an alleged hunger for serious adult dramas about worthwhile subject matter. The film made $1.505 million yesterday for a likely $4.1m debut weekend. The Miles Teller drama, about a group of marines returning home from Iraq, is suffering the same fate that greeted the likes of The Lucky Ones, Lambs for Lions, Valley of Elah and Rendition a decade ago. Hollywood made a go at confronting the post-9/11 realities a decade ago, but nobody showed up.

Sure, it’s easier to get audiences of all political stripes to see something like The Kingdom, Black Hawk Down, Act of Valor, Lone Survivor or American Sniper. But, come what may, you can’t complain that Hollywood doesn’t make adult dramas and/or movies about/for audiences in so-called flyover country and then ignore the likes of Only the Brave (which was quite good) and Thank You for Your Service. Or maybe moviegoers got acclimated to viewing such films as VOD-worthy as Hollywood spent 15 years pushing global blockbusters while the adult stuff went to TV.

Paramount/Black Bears’ Suburbicon is performing terribly as well. The poorly-reviewed George Clooney-directed comedy, based on an old Coen brothers’ screenplay and starring Matt Damon and Julianne Moore as 1950’s suburbanites up to no good, earned just $1.1 million yesterday for what will likely be a $3m weekend. This will be the worst wide-release opening ever for Matt Damon and Paramount’s worst opening weekend ever for a film on more than 2,000 screens. Even if the movie were better, it didn’t help that most of the conversation revolved around everything but whether the movie was any good.

We got plenty of chat, in many of the film’s many negative reviews, about the appropriateness of using a real-life tale of racial discrimination as a backdrop for a tawdry “naughty white nuclear family” caper. And the media circuit was dominated by the likes of Clooney and Damon dealing with the fallout from the Harvey Weinstein revelations. The whole “no publicity is bad publicity” thing is being put to the test this month. Paramount is stuck in it, as its next two movies are Daddy’s Home 2 co-starring Mel Gibson and Alexander Payne’s Downsizing with Matt Damon. And that D- CinemaScore won't help.

In smaller-scale news, Atlas released the faith-based drama Let There Be Light into 373 theaters this weekend. The Kevin Sorbo-directed picture, which is produced by Sean Hannity among others, concerns an atheist who finds his faith after a near-death experience. Alas, the picture was stumbled out of the gate, earning around $587,000 on Friday for a likely $1.65 million weekend. That's a mere $4.4k per-location average.

Open Road absolutely buried the delayed Blake Lively/Jason Clarke drama All I See Is You. Marc Forester's grim tale about a blind woman who reexamines her marriage after her sight is restored, received mixed-negative reviews and ended up on just 283 screens. So, with no publicity and little buzz, it's no shock that the film earned around $47,410 yesterday for a likely $144k weekend. That's a miserable $509 per-location average. So if you want to see this one in theaters, you have until Thursday night to do so.

Nobody trusts these Hollywood animals to make a war or vet film. The know they will get ideological bilge with these people.

In older days it was different.

“We’ve run out of time tonight and will have to delay Matt Damon’s interview...” — says the public.

WTF — Americans grow weary of seeing movies that denigrate American culture? Who could have possibly foreseen that?

By the way folks, remember to 100% boycott the NFL while you stay away from the movies.

I hope Let There Be Light does better.
We have several theaters in town and it did not open here, but maybe it’ll come later.

I take it you’re not a big Blake Lively fan. She is easy on the eyes.

Rotten Tomatoes says this about Suburbicon:

“Suburbicon attempts to juggle social satire, racial commentary, and murder mystery-and ends up making a mess of all three.”

So, it sounds like another preachy Hollyweird movie about evil white people.

It’s my opinion that the greatest movie that will ever be made has already been made. Scorsese recently said “Cinema is dead.” He may be right.

I mean prior to the Vietnam era like William Wyler’s, “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946). Then they showed respect.

If Hollywood never produced another movie again, I wouldn’t shed a tear. Plenty of movies already been made to keep people entertained for years.

Sounds like a real "caper." /s

Clooney and Damon? Sounds like the golden boys aren't so golden anymore.

The overall miserable returns...couldn't happen to a more deserving industry.

In paragraph 1 the author states that the film has solid reviews. In paragraph 3 he states that it is poorly reviewed it’s just typical idiocy from law attention span gaggle of Imbeciles.

Smiling! Anything bad that happens to Hollywood is wonderful news (except a nuke attack since I would be unable to type this).

IO think the movie theatre is dead. But streaming services will continue to offer new movies and documentaries. The oscars have killed themseleves and they gathered a billion fans ion front of TVs at one time. Now they re just political vomitting. The theatre are two expensive and then noisy. At home I can watch what I want when I want and for the price of one movie have the service for a month. My screens are 52 inches and that’s plenty in my small condo.

I went to movies almost eery week from 1951 until 2016. My mother took us on Monday night at discount price. 25 cents to get in and 15 cents for a box of popcorn and a dime for a coke. Didn’t need dinner that night. The manager came on the stage and had raffles. He spoke against “pay TV.” Now the chickens have hit the fan in the roost and the theatre are for high end dating. Look at the places in CA with $20 tickets and food delivered to the seats. Have been to one movie in the theatre the last year. I write down titles that interest me and when they re available watch at home. My adult kids stream everything and rarely go to the movies.
