The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Grand daughter has adopted several kittens and Momma cat. We had a cat get into the house, and it must be a stray, because it wouldn’t let us get close to it.
It came to the top of the basement stairs in the middle of the night and started meowing. When I went upstairs, it scampered off and hid.
So I opened some sardines and set them out on the back step and opened the patio door. Cat went out, and I closed the door behind it.
Chili - sounds good, but a chili dog sounds even better right now. LOL
I have had good luck with the black simpson, and romaine in the winter. I also really like winter density.
I just order row covers and put them over the lettuce patch till spring. I use split logs that we have for the fireplace to anchor them down.
If it’s extra cold, I put some straw on top. My winter beds have concrete blocks painted brown as the back of the bed, and that wall faces southwest, so when the sun shines, they soak up heat and release it at night.
I’m going to try to get some garlic planted this weekend. Maybe some winter wheat too.
Hubby finished taking up the vinyl floor and putting tile in the basement bathroom, and redoing the toilet - new insides and unclogged the line. As soon as he gets the green house up, I’ll be taking stuff out of the house and then rearranging and organizing.
Our basement kitchen needs a new floor too, but not sure what that will be - I’d like something softer than tile.
It’s also time for a new mattress. Researching what is best for aching backs and hipbones.
I miss our trips home. I grew up in SW Missouri, and we used to go there every year for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and vacation.
Since our parents died, we don’t do that, so we haven’t seen our extended family except for funerals. As we get older, the trip gets harder to make, even though it’s only a 4 hr. drive.
All I can say is that I’m loving our new toilet, LOL! So glad you got a new one, too!
Beau is on his way back from winterizing the cabin - and he’s ALSO stopping off on the way back to drop off another dog (he’s sold & delivered FOUR this weekend - Hurrah!) and is picking up chain-link panels so we can get the dog kennels into the barn/shed for the winter.
I am NOT walking up and SLIDING down the icy hillside this winter to tend to the dogs!
We’re ALL too old for this sh#t, LOL!
Research the Sleep Comfort beds. We have one and we love it.
I turned on the base heater in the basement bathroom, but not the rest of the basement. We do have the furnace on upstairs.
The sunshine heats up the family room pretty good, so I won’t have to heat that room till later.
Yep. I too need to get busy. Lord willing and the back don’t go out again. LOL
I need to plant garlic, winter wheat, rye, triticale, and greens. We have a couple of pepper plants that we dug up for the green house. I’m going to plant some patio tomatoes in pots too.
In the past, the cherry tomatoes have done well indoors. We’ll see how it works out for the green house. Thinking I might get some trash cans and put water in them for the sun to heat up during the day and release heat at night.
Well, nothing ventured-nothing gained. Sometimes, when I get uncomfortable with stuff, I just think about famous people who have their mistakes hyped in the news for all the world to see and hear.
I figure if they can live through that, I can take whatever some neighbor hood chattering boob can dish out. LOL
Yep, I am thinking about age - need to clear stuff out so that less likely to trip and fall over throw rugs etc.
Might need to put in some hand rails for the outside stairs.
Did you buy the heated seat option on the new toilet?
Barrels/buckets full of water is a great way to passively heat a greenhouse.
There’s a mountain of good info on the interwebs about such things.
I punched “greenhouse passive heat” into the google machine and came up with enough reading material to last for days.
I wish! But it has a fan in it that is supposed to help control odors. It requires a rechargeable batter pack, which is pretty insane.
Beau said, ‘Here you go! Now you need to charge up the toilet before you use it...” and handed me the battery and charger, LOL!
What I REALLY wanted was a composting toilet, but he said I was going too far. Maybe up at the cabin some day.
(Those composting toilets are expensive; the one I want is $600.00.)
'Plumber Cat' is learning to Plumb. Eva Grace was a BIG help to Daddy while he installed our fancy new toilet.
Neither Eva or Boyd could understand the new storm door that is all glass to let in more light to the kitchen. Some sort of, 'Force Field' is holding them in, LOL!
