The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Hi Greeneyes, et al! My trip back home to Wisconsin to meet my sister and place our Mom at rest next to Dad is completed. It was a nice trip to refresh my Midwestern Roots and see family. I left Wisconsin in October of 1981, and have only been back about four times, since then.
The casket I made for Mom’s urn, along with two of her pups was well-received. I made it of red oak, and lined it with purple satin in the box and red satin under the lid. Mom loved the poem, “Danger”.
Now, it is time to get the garden ready for winter and I hope, get the pvc water lines for the raised bed buiried and ready for spring. Also need to expand our deck-mounted pantry about 5’.
It was in the 30s here last night. We still have some lovely colours in the yard but the leaves are quickly falling. My lettuce is still doing fine on the deck, but everything else is at risk.
We had a fire last night and turned the heat on upstairs for the third time this month. Sad.
Hope your back is feeling better soon, greeneyes.
Bird Seed is a great rebate use! We took total advantage of the rebate this time as Beau needed a new roof on the cabin (they wouldn’t insure it without it!) and the Black Bears tore apart the wooden shed last winter that they use to store bait, so they replaced it with a metal shed.
As an added bonus, the guy who shares the cost of the cabin with us, told us it was OK with him that we used the rebates, as his house is much newer than ours - it burned to the ground due to a lightening strike a few years ago, so he has a whole NEW house thanks to his insurance. ;)
‘Honeynut’ is from Jung’s. (Link below)
It’s a smaller squash which is easier for me to peel and handle. And, there’s just the two of us, so one squash is perfect for a meal.
I made Pasta Sauce with some the other night over mushroom ravioli and it was fantastic! It has a good amount of sweetness, so it’s good for lower-sugar baking. Today I’m baking muffins and using some up, too.
I need to get on that and get more cooked and frozen. Our basement is sometimes too cold for good storage. We’re planning a root cellar in the future. That’s another thing, besides my 40’ row of asparagus, that I REALLY miss about my old farm. :(
But, it’s fun adding garden beds, landscaping and making the most of my ‘new’ (1900!) farm, LOL!

“I left Wisconsin in October of 1981, and have only been back about four times, since then.”
I was wondering why I felt a shift in The Force last week! ;)
Sorry to hear about your Mom. Where did you live in Wisconsin? We’re in tiny Ridgeway; nearest ‘big’ town is Dodgeville.
Also meant to add that the ‘Honeynut’ are prolific! We planted 6 hills and got 75 squash - so plant with that in mind! They need room to roam; their vines are 7-10’ but that’s less than other varieties.
Some of them split (just due to extreme weather - too dry, then too wet) but those are going to the deer, and we’ll be sharing a few, too.
I grew up in Reedsburg. Dad was from Amberg and Mom from Wonewoc.
Nice to know! My folks and just about every relative I remember were all from Milwaukee (or the ‘burbs thereabout) and I have lived in West Allis, Sun Prairie, Madison, Watertown, Fitchburg and now Ridgeway.
What a difference there is, politically, between Milwaukee & Dane and Iowa Counties! I’m loving it out here in the Driftless Area. It’s just gorgeous. :)
I looked up to see where Dodgeville is. I guess I thought you were further up north, all that bear talk! Another thing on my bucket list is going up to Boulder Junction to see the albino deer. I am fascinated with them. I’ve driven up north once back in the 80’s up to Manitowish Waters. Gorgeous scenery all the way up and the lakes! I though Michigan had a lot of them.
I have basement envy! Ours is too warm for storing much ;(. It is semi finished, with the ducting for the house going through there. Im pretty sure it is leaking like crazy. The squash is really the only thing that has done well. I think we will also be putting in a root cellar, for the potatoes, apples, other items.
We also have a cabin in Glidden - that’s where Beau and his pals get all the Black Bear. It’s about 6 hours from us, just shy of Ashland, center north part of the state.
There are black bear around here, but not enough to be worried about. Dumpster or bird feeder raiders, mainly. ;)
We got the first hard freeze of the year on Saturday night here in Central Missouri.
I’m not sure what the official low temp was, but every cold-sensitive plant at my house that spent the night outdoors is now dead. Not just almost dead. Dead dead. I’m going to miss having fresh tomatoes from the garden.
Now that Mrs. Augie’s halloween party is behind me I can concentrate on getting the place cleaned up and ready for winter.
It’s time to plant garlic so I need to get busy.
Not a turnip fan either though I love the greens.
I salt pickled a pint of turnips one year and they made a usable garnish- sort of a cross between pickles and potato chips.
Easy way to get probiotics.
I took a huge leap with my plant-breeding business this week. A fellow who owns the local feed store encouraged me to find a sponsor for one of my projects, and he even gave me a couple names of people to try. It turned out that none of them are in the habit of sponsoring projects like he said they were, but I decided to pursue the idea another way. I now have an Indiegogo campaign started for one of my beans!
I’m really not comfortable putting things out there like that, so I’m kind of freaking out a little.
I froze part of my Rosemary, and put the rest on a paper plate and covered it with a paper plate with holes punched in it. Put it on top of frig to dry out.
We have a bunch of peppers that hubby brought in - need to slice and freeze or dehydrate. We got a freeze over the weekend too.
Well, yes I think they are - exercises, chiropractor, heating pad, turmeric - something is working LOL.
Very good!
I do hope you feel top notch in a hurry.
:)
So true - we should all be thankful for what the Lord has given.
Gardens are pretty much done here - time to plant winter wheat, since we got our first freeze.
I got some concrete blocks to replace some of the rotten wood on a raised bed - will make it deeper too.
