No, I never heard of the Voice either, but Wrecking Ball launched a new phase of her career. I love her long, rumpled hair and energy and spontaneity she put into it. Her manager tried to mentor and mold her but maybe she would have been better if left a free spirit even though she might not have been as well known as she was..

I live in Nashville TN and have been to the Vanderbilt voice clinic when I thought I was having vocal problems. Thankfully, no problem found. It's a state-of-the-art facility that has its main hallway covered with gold and platinum records received from its grateful elite clientele(names you would instantly recognize) who have undergone career-saving treatment that doesn't get reported by the media.
I myself have always wondered whether or not the reports in the media of singers going into rehab for substance abuse issues are cover stories hiding the truth that they have burned up their voices thru improper/untrained singing and just can't produce sound anymore.
