Too many bad teams, awful quarterback play making NFL games hard to watch

HOME SCORES SCHEDULE STANDINGS FANTASY LOG IN Too many bad teams, awful quarterback play making NFL games hard to watch Kaepernick and protests aren't the problem, bad football is the reason ratings, attendance are down Jason La Canfora mugshot by Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora 11h ago • 9 min read

People are staying away from the NFL. Viewership is down and empty seats are up compared to the record ratings of a few years ago. It's hard to argue that fact. Any camera angle that panned across the upper deck in any number of stadiums Sundays confirmed that fact. The issues with ratings are well-documented. It's become convenient to blame that phenomenon, at least in part, on the ongoing issues of player demonstrations but now, nearly a season-and-a-half since Colin Kaepernick first took a knee, I'm not buying it. There's some protesting going on, without a doubt, but it's fans protesting the product being put on the football field, I believe, moreso than any pronounced reaction to a handful of players displaying their Constitutional rights before kick-off. This downturn in the number of eyeballs watching closely every Sunday and Monday and Thursday is much more directly related, in my opinion, to the fact that the number of quarterbacks you would pay big bucks to see in a game with no rooting interest seems to be shrinking by the week.

I always felt that the anthem was merely the final straw for something that has been brewing for a long time.

I agree. For many reasons, football had already grown insufferable before the "take a knee" nonsense.

Actually the two ‘skins games I’ve watched this year were good football games. The quality of the product is the same as it was 3 years ago, 5 years ago heck 20 years ago.

Which is why I will never go back, even if the idiotic SJW crap stops. I have better things to do, and have rediscovered that. Four or five years ago the water cooler talk at work on Mondays was dominated by the NFL. These days I have heard virtually none. It gladdens my heart.

The prices are so low, that maybe the hoodrats can afford to attend the games, after all, this is the demographic the NFL is catering to, so why not?

When the NFL salary caps start dropping then we will know we are winning.

Football requires a certain level of competitive spirit, of motivation, of adrenalin.

It is my impression that the non-football stuff is detracting the players. Neither their head, nor their heart is in what they are doing. They are going through the motions.... and doing that not very well.

When you signed a contract for millions of dollars guaranteed, you can understand why you wouldn’t be so motivated.

Good point about the so-called “Super Bowl”. All the commercials are on YouTube before the game. Some enterprising person could find a way to link them all together so you can watch the commercials only. A technicality savvy person could create a screen where you could select/deselect specific commercials. Even more enterprising would be to add in quality non-Super Bowl commercials and highlights from NHL, bowling, NASCAR, patriotic scenes, etc. This would allow someone to create their own 3-hour replacement show.

American football is a niche sport with little global appeal. Mass immigration is having an impact. We now have 61 million immigrants and their American born children. Generally, they are more interested in soccer, the global game. Add to that the Left’s disdain for football because it is too violent and risky. The capper has been the politization of the NFL. People don’t like the mix of sport with politics

The owners of the NFL have become hostages to the political views of their mostly black players. It will just hasten the decline of football in the US.

Yup. If I were the owner of a team, I'd have a team meeting, and bring out some Ross Perot-style charts showing what will happen to NFL and revenue, and therefore the salary cap, if people stop buying tickets, buying gear or watching televised games. From those charts I would give an honest estimate of how much each infraction costs the NFL (lost revenue/divided by # of kneelers) and make the fine that much. I would then point out that this clown is costing both you AND me money, and we could avoid further blood-letting just by avoiding the infraction.

Yeah sure, bad football is part of it - on any given Sunday, half the games are dogs. But that’s always been there, so it would’ve shown up before now if that was the real reason.

It HAS been going on for a long time. Someone posted a chart here last week showing Monday Night Football ratings since 1970. Ratings had ALREADY dropped by 50% between 1985 and 2012. Now, they have dropped by 50% AGAIN.

The quality of play in the NFL is crap. They have WAY too many teams. There are SO MANY penalties, and they're called so unevenly, you'd have to be blind to not think the games are not rigged.

Without a doubt, this kneeling fiasco is speeding up the process, but... the decline of the NFL has been on-going for quite a long time. In fact, I think there is a broader de-coupling of huge money from many sports.... not just football. There was a "sports bubble".... and, it's deflating.

Hey Jason try reading the comments sections of articles discussing the NFL players taking the knee topic. There are tons of people peed off and deciding to bolt away from viewing the games. Nice try.

For the 49’ers...no one should be paying more than $15 for a seat to watch a marginal team play.
How about the NY Giants? One win, six losses and I guarantee the fans are paying a hell of a lot more than $15 a ticket.

The anti-American racists who inhabit the nfl need to be given the “what for”. May they rot into the dust bin of history. Those who still watch their show have a self-loathing, wanting to be insulted and have their country insulted. No thanks.

Speaking of the Giants who wants to see spoiled child Odell Beckham the junior ( juvenile) celebrate by his mimicking a dog taking a pee? Moron.

You know what the real harm is when people boycott the NFL? The veil falls from the eyes of former fans, and the game appears to be insufferably boring & contrived if they try to watch even a few minutes.

Case in point: we got back from an extended out of town trip. I was a bit tired, and after doing some clean-up chores, sat down and thought I'd flip between a few games. Boy, nothing has changed. Boring & stupid, and after a few plays, cut to commercials. Same old high concept advertisements acting like nothing has changed.

I couldn't take more than a few minutes of this nonsense and then turned off the TV. The NFL is definitely living in a bubble. They took a great game that took tremendous physical & mental discipline to succeed, and created a stupid, frivolous entertainment product geared completely towards selling advertising.

That's the ultimately reveal that will be made even after the American hating exercise is a thing of the past.

No one will see him - he's injured and out for the year.

Watching football forces fans to drink more beer during all the bad officiating, replays and announcers getting worked up about every little thing. It is hard to watch football with even the sound on. The interviews on the sidelines are usually boring. Now, they will not even show us who respects the flag and who refuses common respect. The players sometimes do not even show respect for the fan who demand they respect the flag and country. The evening news follows the game and people continue to shoot each other in the streets.
