Justin Timberlake has been confirmed as the headliner for this year's Super Bowl LII halftime show — but not everyone is firing the confetti cannons.
Folks haven't quite forgotten Timberlake's role in the supposed "wardrobe malfunction" at the 2004 halftime show with Janet Jackson, and how her career took a major hit while his star continued to rise.
The incident, referred to often as "Nipplegate," occured when Timberlake exposed Jackson's breast, which was adorned with a nipple pastie, during the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVII. The planned nature of the performance was broadly debated, though Jackson's team said it was "unintentional."
Jackson was blacklisted by the NFL, and she and CBS were heavily fined by the FCC (later voided). Timberlake got off pretty unscathed, offering a short apology while accepting a Grammy Award at the very same ceremony Jackson had also been banned from.
Now, with Timberlake set to take the stage at the Super Bowl next year, many commentators have called for a Jackson cameo or a total change in billing.

The choices for Super Bowl halftime music really puzzle me. Horrible choices the past few years. So much good music out there and they pick Justin Timberlake?
So far tonight, I've listened to some Frank Zappa, the latest album by Robert Plant, some Tom Petty and then to round out the evening, Beethoven's 3rd Symphony.

You have that right. Timberlake could vaporize and it would have zero effect on the production of quality, creative music that is still out there - what little that remains, that is.

Granted that I’m not sure who I would want to see at a Superbowl halftime, any more: Most of the musician’s whose work I like are dead or gettin’ too old to not be “Spinal Tap” onstage.

Petty was probably the last good show I actually watched... Prince was ok, but not my thing... all these pop stars and rappers... sucktacular.

The other thing is how is Timberlake at fault?

Thats funny that you said that. I was just thinking about some aging yet touring bands out there and thinking how much I would like to see Spinal Tap do a performance billed as its “farewell tour” for some televised event.
Maybe BLM and Antifa would be a better choice to supply the half time entertainment. They can riot and mug everybody in attendance.
