At about 3 p.m. on Friday, February 3, Tim Piazza, a sophomore at Penn State University, arrived at Hershey Medical Center by helicopter. Eighteen hours earlier, he had been in the kind of raging good health that only teenagers enjoy. He was a handsome, redheaded kid with a shy smile, a hometown girlfriend, and a family who loved him very much. Now he had a lacerated spleen, an abdomen full of blood, and multiple traumatic brain injuries. He had fallen down a flight of stairs during a hazing event at his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, but the members had waited nearly 12 hours before calling 911, relenting only when their pledge looked f****** dead. Tim underwent surgery shortly after arriving at Hershey, but it was too late. He died early the next morning.
Safe bet this one will soon be off campus.
I believe most are long past hazing. The ones that allow it now are idiots.
This is indeed tragic and this young man should have never died. Yet this largely male ritual of extreme hazing that often results in death has occurred among young groups of males throughout recorded history. The various rituals be they happening in fraternities, military units, religious orders, athletic teams or social organizations appear to be a rite of passage that may have some Darwinian basis to ensure survival of the larger group.
The numbers if deaths and injuries over the history of the Greeks at PSU is very small. Compared to the good that comes from forming group bonds on a campus of over 25,000 students
This tragedy reflects a lack of ADULT supervision ( 18-22 yr old jocks are not “ adults” in terms of self regulating risky behaviors)
And
A lack of social conscience and empathy on the part of every young man who ignored the dying pledges’ distress ( parent failure)
And
And great ignorance of basic first aid
Jeezus - almost every teen in BS and GS has had First Aid training to recognize severe injury. If frat houses had ADULT on premise and a trained first aider this could have neen averted. And require every Greek to take a course like BSA YPT
oh please, these assh8oles do no good, they think they are special and they are simply spoiled stupid morons.
I thought the whole idea of frat houses and the like was to NOT have adult supervision and show they were in control of their choice making, which many times is stupid, reckless and hurtful to others, but not always leading to death of a person.
I haven’t finished reading the article yet. However, I am not surprised that the replies are treating this as no big deal ... it’s as if they didn’t read the article, for one thing.
These so-called “brothers” should be charged with negligent homicide.
Or manslaughter, they should have known their conduct would risk life and limb.
According to the article, manslaughter and aggravated assault charges were dismissed.
folking disgusting. My daughter joined one, I remember my ex wouldn’t even tell me, his wife, about Sigma Chi and their stupid rituals. I hate secret societies.

One has to wonder about political connections of big donors to the university to help cover up the crime.
The pledge was drunk (because of the hazing), falls down a stairs and is obviously severely injured (unconscious, hemorrhaging), and the fraternity doesn’t call 911 until the next day when the boy’s body is literally going cold.
So what?
Big deal!
Penn State football will soon be ranked #2 in the nation and that’s all that matters.
And they have it all on video. Those young men deserve a “depraved indifference” murder charge as much as that psycho girl in ... Massachusetts? ... who talked her boyfriend into killing himself in real time.
Given the soft rotten culture we are in that has developed 2 generations of immature selfish vice ridden hedonistic and vulnerable young people, this incident shows that the Greek system - if it wants to preserve any semblance of honor and brotherhood- needs to embrace youth protection standards and safety rules like other youth organizations serving teen members
At a minimum having a trained First Aider at every event is quite simple and makes absolute sense given that you have teenagers drinking and having sex with no one having their back
We have First Aiders at every Scout and Crew event ( Venture Crew being older teens up to age 21) . Training the Greeks’ older members everyone over age 18 in YPT and First Aid/CPR and requiring those over 21 to pull duty as sober responsible event staff only makes sense
Lovely culture at Pedo U. Just lovely.
” I remember my ex wouldnt even tell me, his wife, about Sigma Chi and their stupid rituals. “
That’s because they are none of your business. I don’t ask my wife about her Phi Mu ritual.
Ironically, it happens outside fraternities. But since there is no “organization”, it isn’t considered news.
We just had a local student drink himself to death. He was not in a fraternity so they had no one to blame. Kid dead, story dropped.
Pro-fraternity people are for hazing deaths no more than pro-gun people are for mass shootings. Giving in to the current feminization of men isn't a good idea. Before we all suddenly start sounding like Pajama boy and argue that fraternities should be closed, ponder these cogent thoughts by Milo on the subject:
University administrators across the nation have been cracking down on Greek life. Why? Because they see them as an existential threat to their feminist agenda. They want a culture of numales, neutered bearded people who want to hug muslims not defend their country. A place where men can be manly and women can be womanly. It is your gender studies departments worst nightmare. And it drives them insane.
In a way, it makes sense that the same administrators who hate Western civilization and are ripping out of your curriculum the highest achievements of that civilizations artists and thinkers would try to stamp out the kind of male camaraderie on which that civilization was built, going as far back as my ancient Greek ancestors.
Look, dont be idiots. Dont haze your freshmen into the hospital. And do try not to break the law. But dont let these miserable self-righteous p******ruin your college experience either. In modern society, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for men to be men. For masculinity to flourish in all its glory. For daring and risk-taking to live free, or at least relatively free. Fraternities are one of those places. They deserve to be protected.
