This is indeed tragic and this young man should have never died. Yet this largely male ritual of extreme hazing that often results in death has occurred among young groups of males throughout recorded history. The various rituals be they happening in fraternities, military units, religious orders, athletic teams or social organizations appear to be a rite of passage that may have some Darwinian basis to ensure survival of the larger group.
The greater group is not gonna survive if they assist in the death of their own...if you’re gonna think biologically.....maybe the example of lemming migration and survival is a better model
