US winter forecast: La Niña to fuel abundant snow in Rockies; Bitterly cold air to blast Midwest

A chilly winter is in store for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, particularly when compared to last year. For most of both regions, this will translate to an above-normal snow season.

“Areas in the I-95 corridor will average close to normal, within a few inches,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said. “Areas away from the I-95 corridor have a better chance at a big snowfall.”

New York City and Boston, Massachusetts, may be the exceptions to this, with early predictions calling for 6 inches of snowfall or more above normal in both cities.

Areas prone to lake-effect snow will also see high totals, including Cleveland, Ohio; Erie, Pennsylvania; and Buffalo, New York.

“I think this year is going to bring a good ski season in the Northeast,” Pastelok said. “And around the holidays we should have some snow for the interior Northeast.”

I saw one yesterday whose brown was about a third of its length (DC area). I think the more black, the worse the winter is supposed to be.

I knew some college kids who’d raid the freebie boxes outside the used bookstore to do the very same thing.

Anyone know their actual track record? Seems the Accuweather daily forecasts have not been at all dependable.

Lake effect snow is like a gigantic container of snow exploded. I live two blocks from Lake Michigan. It is something to see if you can stay home and watch it, but it’s the devil’s own work if you’re on the road.

A chilly winter is in store for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic,

But as has been the case from what I have seen for NE, the NOAA predicts warmer than usual, as if they must due to belief in AGW:

Nov-Dec-Jan 2017-18

Jan-Feb-Mar 2018

I have NEVER seen them predict lower-than-average temps for the NE. They also predict average precipitation for the NE.

In the past:

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. For 201s-2014 winter (November 21, 2013)

Above-average temperatures in the Southwest, the South-Central U.S., parts of the Southeast, New England and western Alaska. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2013/20131121_winteroutlook.html

In reality,

NOAA's National Climatic Data Center said that the period from December 2013 through February 2014 was the 34th coldest such period for the contiguous 48 states as a whole since modern records began in 1895. Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri registered a top 10 coldest winter. Seventeen other states from Washington state to the northern Gulf Coast to New York were colder than average...

On the other end of the spectrum, it was the record warmest winter in California, and the fourth warmest winter in Arizona, according to NOAA/NCDC. Alaska came in with their eighth warmest winter. https://weather.com/news/news/winter-ncdc-state-climate-report-2013-2014-20140313

On December 1, 2013, the weakening of the polar vortex led to the beginning of an abnormally cold trend in the Eastern and Central United States.[15] On December 6, the continued deterioration of the polar vortex led to the jet stream pushing southward, bringing record cold temperatures across the Eastern U.S. During the cold wave, which extended from December 6–10, over 150 daily precipitation records[16] and close to 100 daily snowfall records were broken across the northeastern, southeastern and south central United States.[17] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_North_American_winter

Winter Weather 2014-2015 Recap | The Weather Channel https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/winter-weather-watch-2014-2015-20140930

May 22, 2015 - A recap of the winter 2014-2015 season. ... were much warmer overall in the Southwest and much colder in the Northeast. Northeastern United States The North American winter season to date has expressed a significant level of variance. First, a cyclone in the Bering Sea enabled a change in the atmospheric pattern to occur; according to Jeff Masters from Weather Underground, this cyclone brought about a "ripple" in the jet stream, and the presence of a high-pressure ridge over the western United States and a low-pressure trough over the southern and central United States enabled a great intrusion of very cold air to pervade southward out of Canada.[5] ..

Nine states in the Northeast United States had their coldest recorded January–March ever on record.[70] According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, from February 1 to 28, 2015, 898 lowest minimum temperature records were broken and 91 were tied in the Northeastern United States. In addition, 736 records for the highest snow depth were broken and 138 were tied during the same period.[71]

Over a large portion of New England, February 2015 was the most extreme winter month observed in modern record keeping. Eastport, Maine was one of many places also seeing record snowfall, with 132.5 inches (337 cm) over five weeks. Snowflakes fell on 19 out of 28 days in the Boston, Massachusetts area, setting records in numerous locations with depths up to over 36.0 inches (91 cm) deep in certain places. Boston broke the previous record for the snowiest month by almost 24.0 inches (61 cm).[72] With a total of 108.6 inches (276 cm) as of March 16, Boston broke its previous all-time winter season (July 1 through June 30) record of 107.6 inches (273 cm) set in 1995–96.[73] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014%E2%80%9315_North_American_winter

Here’s a source that’s less dramatic and probably more honest:

http://www.radioiowa.com/2017/09/26/climate-prediction-center-issues-a-la-nina-watch/

...“A number of the models vary from just marginal La Nina conditions to moderately strong ones,” Todey says. “There’s not a good consensus as to how strong this one will be, therefore, we’re kind of waffling on what the outlook is going to mean to us.”...

...“No where does CPC put in a below-average chance for temperature but they are saying mostly equal chances for below or above average,” Todey says.

“You’re balancing this trend toward warmer winters with the La Nina conditions which have a little better probability of being cooler.”

Todey says a La Nina system could also lead to more snow over the Midwest and Northern Plains this winter...

“Global Warming - Climate Change” world’s biggest hoax and scam.

Just like Obama causing Global Flooding by peeing in the ocean.

That much can humans contribute.

Elaborate scam to screw off taxpayers off their money!

Earth climate and changes are dependent on Sun’s and Sunspots activity supplying 99.99% of energy. Sunspots cycles have 11 year duration and significant variations between them. Humans can do nothing about it.

Volcano eruptions and forest fires can produce much more disruptions to climate than all humans and SUVs together.

CO2 is not poison, it is “food” for plants, which in turn produce Oxygen, that we need to breathe.

STOP the scam, jail all the scammers!!!

God bless and protect Mr. Trump!

MAGA!!!!

Yo 95% of scientwists:

Did you notice temperature drops when sun eclipse happened?

Was that because sun’s output was being shielded, or all the SUVs were confiscated?

I agree. I grew up just south of Lake Erie. Snowdrifts taller than my father. I'm glad I moved away from all that.
