San Diego’s Hepatitis Outbreak Is A Man-Made Disaster (16 dead)

Hepatitis A, spread by fecal contamination, has killed 16 people and sickened 421 since November.

An outbreak of hepatitis A, a dangerous but preventable disease that is spread through fecal contamination and attacks the liver, has gotten so out of hand
in San Diego that the county government is handing out plastic poop bags and washing the streets with bleach. (Emphasis mine)

The outbreak has killed 16 people and infected 421 since November, ravaging San Diego’s large homeless and illicit drug-using population.
It could eventually cost the county health department up to a million dollars, a local health official estimated.

But San Diego could have avoided its hepatitis A crisis — or at least ensured it didn’t get this bad — if its homeless residents had better access to housing
and the city provided the services they need to stay healthy, activists and public health experts say.

You don’t leave till you have a job or a place to stay in the community where people supervise you taking your meds.

worked in prisons for 27 years and consulted in 15 states. Our chief medical officer was an epidemiologist. We set up TB rooms in the clinics at two places with enhanced b]ventilation and annual testing of employees.

You can control things inside much better than on the street.

I’d be glad to entertain your ideas of how to solve the “homeless” problem.

The mentally ill homeless population has access to housing, they refuse to stay in it. It takes too much of their check that they would rather spend on drugs.

See this over and over again.

This problem wont end until large mental health state hospitals are built and we have the ability to commit for long term.

I did not create the problem, so I do not feel obligated to come up with a solution.

Judges should be admonished. It is a public health and safety concern to allow people to sleep on the street and in arks and so forth and people will be arrested for violating that law. And as i said accumulate the violations and put them in facilities.

Our son developed C-diff and we learned to wash hands all the time. That stupid sanitizer does not do it. Each finger has five surfaces. So make sure you wash all of them. I am especially aggressive with the tips and the backs of my hands. And when you’re done, use a paper towel, the blowers are ridiculous, and use one to open the door out of the restroom. Usually there is a wastebasket there. If not, either toss it or drop it on the floor. The manager will eventually get the message. I was never germaphobic before but I am now. My husband caught Hep A canoeing in the Ozarks and it is really awful.

16 dead and 400 affected in a town of 3.5 million...and this is a crisis? Maybe Congress needs to define or redefine the meaning of “crisis”.

If we take a hard line, the ones who can work will get the message. The jails will not become overcrowded because they will do what they need to do to remain out. It is the mental health cases where some more resources will be needed. but when you look at the services being provided now (in SD they are spraying the streets and sidewalks with disinfectant 4 times a week) can be redirected. Smaller clinics ,say 100 beds are more humane and effective than large state hospitals.

Mercat :".. the blowers are ridiculous, and use one (paper towel) to open the door out of the restroom."

Preventing CROSS CONTAMINATION is hard enough even with a paper towel.
Most large shopping stores have gone to the blower concept to save the expense of paper towels,
whereas, in fact, the blower system actually aerates the germs spreading and dispersing them though out the room.
Hand blowers should be considered a HAZMAT incident - choose paper towels -
If paper towels are not available, complain to the management !

Um...no. Most need to be committed to mental treatment. But because of the ACLU and Whorealdo Rivera...they can't anymore.

Try a no poop or pee on the streets law. If the cops catch a bum doing it, first thing they do is taze him.

That would work if they’re spherical bums in a vacuum. Otherwise, rioters will burn the city down and the cops will be up on Federal civil rights charges.

Mashood :" 16 dead and 400 affected in a town of 3.5 million...and this is a crisis? .."

If you are one of the 400 with the disease, through no fault of your own, then yes, it is a crisis... to you !!
Each one of those 400 might have a family, a spouse, and perhaps children. The likelihood of spreading grows exponentially.
Lets say 10 of them take a trip to another state on vacation, and are unaware that they are active carriers, since they have no symptoms.
This has the potential of spreading like influenza, affecting not just the homeless, but also the commuters who work, or the school teacher, or the athlete in a lockeroom.
Because it is infectious, all the residents are potentially susceptible, not just the homeless.
Health authorities are trying to 'nip it in the bud', and contain this infectious disease, in its early stage of development.

people are having sex in the encampments and on the street, but they are also defecating daily in public without cleaning it up or washing their hands.
