The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Last of the harvest continues to occupy my preserving methods. We have yellow squash and a whole bunch of green peppers that will be ready soon.
I have some potatoes to dig - maybe - if the vole didn't eat them up. I have a batch of apples left to put on the dehydrator, and will be canning up a batch of chicken salsa soup this weekend.
I didn't do the things I planned to do outdoors today. Woke up with a severe case of sciatica-at least that's what I think it is. So I have avoided activities that make it hurt worse.
Had started on basement pantry inventory and reorganization this week, clearing out unrelated objects that tend to get thrown in the space that should be in the garage or utility room upstairs. Had to curtail that a bit too.
Went back to doing the exercises that are for back pain, as I had been busy and skipped those this week. Maybe that was the reason it hit, or maybe not.
Had a good sale on Hamburger and hot dogs this week. So I canned a batch of hamburger, made chili with the rest. Experimented with canning hot dogs. Some with chili and some without.
The leftovers went into the crock pot, and I was going to package them up for freezing, but they were such a hit, they disappeared before I could do it. LOL Glad I got the processing done before the sciatica hit.
Hoping that tomorrow I'll be moving better, and can get some things done for the winter garden. Hope all is well with you and yours. Prayers up for all, especially the victims of mother nature's episodes. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

I received my garlic yesterday - broke it down to cloves today - the cat stole one, so I’m sill looking for that!
We have had a spate of REALLY HOT DAYS this week, mid-80’s, though no humidity and breezy; supposed to cool off and RAIN Saturday night into Sunday morning. (We NEED need some rain!)
Mostly I’ve been putting up produce this week; salsa and pasta sauce.
Got more lettuces planted for the fall and the late-summer Turnips and the Brussels Sprouts are looking good!

Figs are coming strong... do hey freeze well?
Got a few more tomatoes which were great. Been digging up potatoes as I need them and production was good. Chipmunks have decimated all the beans I planted, but I planted alot hoping to keep them distracted from other plants and it seems it worked pretty well.
I forgot to add that there is a chance of snow next weekend.
Look forward to the pics. I’m behind on planting the fall lettuces for the winter garden, but then I’m regularly behind on many things these days - My to do list has not adjusted from when I was younger and quicker with more stamina. LOL
These days, if I don’t get it done in the AM, it might have to wait till the next day.
I have no idea about figs. But I’d guess that dehydration or canning might be a great way to go. I’m not a big fan of freezing most things-I tend to forget about them when they are in the freezer-except for meat.
I sometime freeze stuff like tomatoes until winter. Then get them out and make sauce or salsa etc. when the extra heat is welcome.

I have some lovely beautifu pink banana squash plus trombone squash but they need a little more time....

Snow - better you than me. LOL I am NOT ready for snow. We are really spoiled by having such mild winters recently.
I’m thinking we are back to having snow in November instead of sunny days. Probably not going to be running around in shirt sleeves in December either.
Hubby just brought me some research he has done on fireplace inserts - guess he’s getting ready for colder weather too. We haven’t used the fireplaces for the past 8 years, but the electric bill keeps going up like crazy, so we may go back to supplementing the heat.
We have quite a lot of wood that’s been cut and needs to be used for something besides compost.
Interesting. I never thought of canning hot dogs. But canning them with chili sounds wonderful!
I missed the Labor Day sales of hamburger and hot dog buns ;(
I use those to make homemade croutons. They are easy and are a hit. I usually buy about 10 packages and end up with about 4-5 of the hot dog or hamburger bags filled with croutons. They last until Memorial Day, when I get more on sale.
Oh MY - Aching back without a doubt. I can just imagine it!
I have an old window pane - the wood is rotten, but the glass is still good. Was thinking of making a cold frame, but if we get the sunroom/green house, I may just use it to make a solar oven.
I saw a video from the Fla. Extension office on how to do that using Styrofoam cooler or cardboard box.
Our Amish paste tomato vines continue to produce altho the sunlight has been reduced. Football shaped tomatoes are getting smaller, tho still good for sauce.
We’re in an east-west valley along the Lake of the Ozarks with lots and lots of oak trees above our house and gardens. Our sunlight has been reduced by 10 or 20 percent, reducing tomato production.
So...the end of the season is at hand. Some green bell peppers coming in our lower garden, some garlic planted for next year. A few last minute cucumbers...

Let me tell you that hot dog or hamburger buns also make the best bread crumbs for meat loaf or breading.
When I was a girl, we used to get a box of breading that was made from buns, and ritz type crackers. We would take a pork tenderloin and pound it till it was thin - like a dozen sheets of paper thin - 1/8 an inch maybe.
Then we would dip that in egg mixture and those crumbs. Put a quarter cup of lard on the grill and cook that loin to make a pork loin sandwich. Of course the other bun was smothered with butter, and placed on the back of the grill to toast to a nice golden color.
Served with mayo, lettuce, tomato and chips or frys.
The jars of dogs, chili dogs, lil smokies, and chili all look good. The test will come in a few weeks when we “test” them to see how they taste - it’s got to be better than Vienna Sausages is what I figure.
So if the plain dogs work out, that’s another open and eat meal - no cooking necessary and should taste great with pork and beans.
Sounds good to me. I was thinking of you this past week. Saw a movie named “OZARK”. Guy moved to the Lake of the Ozarks to escape the clutches of a mobster and to laundry money. A comedy/drama unbelievable scenario, but the scenery looked like Missouri. LOL
What does your cat do with the garlic?
My baby arugula is coming in! As are the romaine and cabbage and butter lettuce. But this is my first time growing arugula, so I am excited!
Other than the introduction. the “Ozarks” movie was shot in Alabama.
