Dear John: When will the US understand that the universal sport of soccer cannot exist in our country? It is a poor man’s sport where no equipment is needed, only a ball and a field in which to kick it.
It cannot survive in the US for three reasons: Boring, boring, boring.
The most excitement is among the spectators who burn or stampede the stadiums or kill the goalie or referee — which is where the term “fan” was derived: “Fanatic.”

At least soccer players aren’t wasting our time giving their political opinions on everything.
Indoor soccer is quite a bit more fun to watch, and play.
Personally, I enjoy rugby. I tried soccer when I was a kid and found it to be no better than kickball. Rugby, however, is more dynamic and is more fun. In the early 1990s, I was introduced to Australian Rules Football and have enjoyed it ever since.
I’m one of those who, when asked to associate a word with “soccer”, would immediately blurt out “hooligan”.
This is silly. Whoever doesn’t like soccer doesn’t have to watch it, like any sport. The best in any professional sport are phenomenal athletes, so if you don’t like the sport, please don’t demean the athletics of it. There are a ton of American football players and NBA players who love soccer and follow European teams.
Regarding boring, any sport will be boring to you if you don’t understand it enough to appreciate the difficulty involved in playing it. A fast moving hockey game that ends 1-0 is not boring. A baseball game with great defense and great pitching, but ends 1-0 can be intriguing. I didn’t have a full appreciation for how incredibly athletic professional soccer players are until I went to the World Cup and saw for myself. Absolutely amazing athletes.
Soccer reminds me of my high school love life. Hours of frantic effort and never scoring.
I grew up in a place where soccer was THE sport to play, but I've always said it has some serious limitations in the U.S. It simply doesn't play well to a television audience, and it isn't exciting enough to attract your average American sports fan.
Don't confuse kids rec soccer in the United States with real soccer worldwide. Soccer players are some of the best conditioned and talented athletes in the world. Take a look at Lionel Messi and say he has little to no talent.

That’s how many of the soccer folks would feel about watching a perfect game being pitched.

What kind of people would tolerate this?
People that were ripe for socialist control by so-called experts and authority figures.
As soccer rises in popularity in the US you can bet that the number of citizens open to socialism will rise.
It's no coincidence that soccer and socialism begin with the same three letters.
Anyone who thinks soccer is boring doesn’t understand the game. Like most people that grew up in the US over the last fifty years, I played everything but soccer throughout school and after. Basketball was my first love but soccer is my true love. The game is like human chess and the athletic ability required to play at a high level is on par with any sport. Speed, agility and endurance are paramount but to be truly good the player needs to out think his/her opponents. The coach has less impact because the play is continual. Players need to make adjustments collectively. Played well it is beautiful. Played poorly it’s kickball. Sadly, the US men are not playing a beautiful version yet but the the US women- who are dedicated athletes in comparison to any- play at the highest level. Hats off to the ladies.
A "perfect" 0-0 game in soccer requires far fewer stops, especially since most of the attempted goals in a 0-0 game go wide of the mark.
Also, pitching is an offensive activity whereas goalkeeping is a defensive one which for better or worse is not as well-respected.
Soccer would be better if they still played with the decapitated head of a vanquished enemy like in the old days.
They can zoom in and you can see some people maneuvering a ball around with no context, or they can zoom out and you see ants arranged on a field.
Why settle for the ‘beautiful game’ when you can watch the ‘sweet science’?
