A re-imagining of Steven J. Cannells 1981 cult classic The Greatest American Hero is flying back to development with a new creative team, a big new commitment and a big twist.
ABC has given a put pilot commitment to the half-hour single-camera project. In it, the unlikely (super)hero at the center Ralph Kinley (played by William Katt) in the original series is Meera, an Indian-American woman. The Greatest American Hero comes from Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khans Fierce Baby. 20th Century Fox TV, where Fierce Baby is based and Fruchbom recently signed an overall deal, will co-produce with ABC Studios.
Written by Fruchbom, the re-imagining of The Greatest American Hero centers around Meera, a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland, whose talents include tequila drinking and karaoke and not much else. Then some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hand
I’ll skip. Thank you.
Sounds absolutely retarded
Why not a Native American American hero.?
At first I thought the subject was Elizabeth Warren.
These shows are so crappy. Arrow is one I’ve had to watch far too often for family reasons. The male heroes can’t win a fight and are pathetically incompetent, waiting to be rescued by the eighty pound female ninja warriors who dispense with the bad guys in two blows, never get hit, and don’t smear their makeup. The men are shocked, beaten with whips, and pummeled in their faces on the ground. It’s feminist trash.
That theme song from the original show was boss though. The show sucked but you had to hear that theme song.
Wasn’t the original series cancelled because the main character’s name was similar to the man who shot President Reagan?
Syndication rights in Mother India will pay better that niche programming for Indian casinos.
That would make more sense.
Is this from the Onion?
Not to worry, the Robert Culp character will be recast as a bald sodomite.
The original wasn’t any good at all - Hollywood really is scraping the bottom of the barrel creatively, they’re now down to remaking bad old TV shows no one watched rather than try to come up with a single original idea.
The show was fairly good.
His suit was shown to have limitations like when GAH was in a haunted house.
The show was fun. You know, fun. It wasn’t supposed to be serious. It was supposed to be fun. It was fun to watch. Fun.
One of those 80 pound wonders will be cast as the lead of Sledge Hammer reboot if such an evil thing is greenlit.
LOL! Good one. :D
What racism replacing a white make with an Indian woman. They’re just appropriating white culture.
Hyperbole aside -
It’s a stupid idea - the intent of casting the Indian woman is to lift up their appearance. Turning her into a loser super hero is anathema to the original story. So they’ll have to toss the whole loser point out and make her a “normal” super hero.
Of course it’ll bomb (I’ll not watch it) and it’ll all be rottentomatoes fault.
I never did see the GAH character as a loser just a very average guy placed in a circumstance he was not suited for.
He’d have been ok if he could’ve held onto that instruction book!
