Summer Box Office Suffers Historic Decline in U.S

By the time Labor Day weekend wraps, summer box-office revenue in North America will end up being down nearly 16 percent over last year, the steepest decline in modern times and eclipsing the 14.6 percent dip in 2014. It will also be the first time since 2006 that summer didn't clear $4 billion.

I was a smoker back in the ‘80’s. I didn’t like it, got no pleasure from it, and felt restrained from other things because of it. One day when I had a cold and felt miserable and found myself contemplating throwing my boots and heavy jacket just to trudge down to the market for a pack of smokes I said to myself, “Enough!” and quit.

In the mid 2000’s I realized that part of my habit patterns were to turn on the boob toob and then ignore it for the rest of the day. It was on but I wasn’t paying any attention to it. The times that I did I invariably got angry at all the type-casting of pubbies as mean, whites as exploitative, and men as the wreckers of the universe - somehow simultaneously dumber than wood yet diabolically clever in their evilness.

I turned it off. And in very short order it stayed off. I still have it but I can’t remember the last time i turned it on. I don’t even now if it still works.

I used to go to the movies. My favorite is Sci-Fi. I’ve never been naive enough not to see the subtle little messages inserted into the themes of the movies, but (with small exceptions) they were tolerable. Until they weren’t. Until the passing of one of the greatest generations of actors gave way to the worst (so far), most pitiful excuse for “acting” that made me yearn for high school drama class again.

I can’t remember the last movie I went to. It may have been Titanic (I remember laughing when what-his-name went under for the last time).

I don’t go because I don’t care. I don’t care because THEY DON’T ENTERTAIN! (sorry for shouting). Everything about them is excess. They traumatize instead of titillate. They insult instead of illuminate. They try to make you feel like a voyeur instead of one of the characters. They routinely fail on every level and worst of all - they bore me (when they’re not offending me). Why pay money for that?!

I keep going to the movies hoping to see something good. Disappointed every time

Up until a few years ago, I would go two or three times a month. There were some ho decent indie movies or something interesting enough to watch.

One factor is I hate the new process....assigned seats and reclining soft seats. I fall asleep before the trailers are done, and I inevitably got stuck sitting next to someone who was a distraction. Then there's the quality. The last two movies I saw were Hidden Figures and LaLa Land, both worth seeing. But since then? Why bother?

Hollywood recent movies have the following great new features:

o New Heros like brutal Communist Chinese. We all look up to censorship, suicide nets, loss of body organs for disagreers.

o New Attractions like sneaky gotcha gay scenes.

o Hatred for all things Liberty.

- this is their formula for movie success.

Next new feature should be OUTSOURCE movies to Somalia. What could go wrong? Old fashioned cars replaced by donkeys.

With modern television quality and home theater quality, other than for 3D IMAX, why would anyone go to a theater to watch a movie? I don’t get it.

Our local theater is going to try to fight this by installing recliners and offering beer and wine. But I have beer and wine at home, can pause/rewind when I want or need to and don’t have to do it with the company of potentially unpleasant strangers. Why go?

How much is due to KODI?

Free (illegal) steaming of all movies...gotta take a bite out of the box office.

They’re staying away from theaters because the movies suck and instead watching liberal Hollywood at home on their 65” 4k UHD TVs. .............................. Only 59” TV,.................. But! The Xbox attached gets You Tube, and You Tube has the great ones made in the 30’s to 50’s. Too many to watch. Been watching all those newer Polish, Hungarian, Russian and German made films. What ever happened to Randolf Scott? He’s all over the place on Youtube, Jimmy Stewart, Erroll Flynn, Cagney and Bogart too.

Why pay $15 a ticket when for a home internet connection you can pay $1500.00 a year. Nobody factors in connection costs.

And with this news, expect more LGBT/Politically Corrected remakes of Hollywood movies like:
1) Pulp Fiction - remade to where the sodomy rape victims actually enjoy the encounter and immediately went out and joined a Gay Pride parade!
2) Dirty Harry - remade to where Harry is a frustrated, closeted homosexual who takes out all his frustrations on innocent African-American citizens!
3) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - remade as “Ms. Black and the Oppressed Seven Little People” where the Evil Queen oppresses the minorities to live in rancid conditions and forces them to work in the mines for little to no pay; but that will all change with Ms. Black leading the charge to civil rights (including prosecuting the Prince for sexual assault because Ms. Black didn’t sign a pre-approved, carnal-knowledge authorization form before he kissed her)!
4) His Girl Friday - Now “Her Boy Friday” - need I say anymore?

And many, Many, MANY more! Oh boy, I just can’t wait!!

Streaming has brought on a renaissance to television right now. It's the best it has ever been as a medium. Theatrical releases can't compete, which is why there are so many mindless comic book movies aimed at teenagers who just want to get away from their homes for a few hours.

Imagine a good science fiction novel done as a 9 to 12 episode TV series with high production values. I'd watch in no time flat. :-)

In fact, even the superhero genre is getting more and more in to TV. Supergirl and a couple of other DC Comics superhero shows have done well for the CW, and I wouldn't be surprised that Disney's Marvel Productions is seriously looking at doing a lot of similar shows for ABC or the upcoming Disney streaming service.

“More and more, my wife and I are going for old stuff. It’s been so long that many of them are new again. Some are timeless to some time has not been kind”

The only down side is the sadness in the contrast between what the real America was vs what it has become. Why can you imagine...people used to actually be able to smoke in bars? The freedom lost in such a short time is astounding.

Let’s see the last time I was in a movie theater my wife took me out for my birthday, it was 2007 or 2008; saw Will Smith in some ‘Omega Man’ type remake. It was all right. Haven’t been back since though...F#*k you Hollywood!

The only summer movie I’ve enjoyed so far is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 ... I get a kick out of the humor and the simple fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously (also, no in your face or even subtle political nonsense). It reminds me a lot of the 1980 Flash Gordon movie only with far better acting in the lead roles.

That opening credit scene with Baby Groot dancing to ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky while the interdimensional alien is beating the crap out of the team is one of my all time favorites.

I didn’t see it in the theater though ... I waited for, uh, BluRay, yeah, I, uh, rented a BluRay :-) (I do not fund Disney ;-))
