Mother Nature certainly isn't helping the dramatic downturn at the August box office, where revenue for the weekend could hit its lowest level in more than 15 years, in addition to being down nearly 50 percent from the same frame last year.
Hurricane Harvey has prompted theater closures in Corpus Christi and other locales along the Texas Gulf Coast. Inland, numerous cinemas have also shuttered in Houston.
Even without the storm, none of the weekend's new offerings were expected to earn more than $5 million, and that's proving to be the case.
Animated family film Leap!, from Harvey Weinstein's shop, is projected to do the best, earning an estimated $1.6 million Friday for a projected $4.8 million-$5 million debut from 2,575 theaters for a third-place finish behind holdovers The Hitman's Bodyguard ($9 million) and Annabelle: Creation ($7.5 million), respectively. Hitman's Bodyguard will join only a short list of films to ever win a weekend with less than $10 million, at least in modern times.

One of my favorite things is to go to the movies. Actors politics ruined that. Have only gone once this year.
Has nothing to do with Trump.
Arnold’s last several projects have all bombed. His liberalism, the maid and the constant Trump supporter bashing has something to do with it. I used to be a big fan but no more.
Is there even much of a Hollywood anymore? It seems more and more movies and television shows are filmed in Canada as liberal hypocrites seek the monetary advantages of tax credits and lower production costs.
Was watching a Midsomer Murders DVD last night when I caught a picture of my stepmother. She was a model and was featured in a poster recruiting army nurses during WWII. Her image only lasted about a second or so (she was on the cover of a supposed DVD about women during WWII that the detective was watching for background on a case he was working). Hell of an Easter Egg for me. The wonders of the pause/rewind control has changed the way we watch things.
Just because folks watch them doesn't mean the movies aren't crappy. Remakes, sequels and flashy computer graphics don't make great cinema.
“Theres too much CO2 in the air to go to the movies.”
Not only that, but I was headed towards the theater last Tuesday and as I got closer, it kept getting darker. I turned the car around, and as I headed home it got brighter and brighter. The sun was fully restored when I got to the house. Think of all the crops and people I saved from freezing! I won’t try that again.
Arnold's movies bomb because they're derivative, by-the-numbers, generic, bland, predictable, totally forgettable and he's a wrinkly old man who still thinks it's 1992. In rehashing the same crap over and over again, he exemplifies what is wrong with Hollywood.
Hollywood has one job; entertain us. People aren't boycotting Schwarzenegger films because he says mean things about President Trump. They're boycotting his films because they're not very good. Twenty five years ago, the crap he makes today would've gone straight to the video rental market and not even bothered with a theatrical release.
That doesn't even take into account the fact that idiot producers, directors and pretty boy actors won't STFU about their illogical Leftist politics.
***The problem is that they are not entertaining!***
This was Cecil B DeMille’s biggest nightmare. That is why his movies are “over the top” entertaining.
Just watched his UNION PACIFIC a few nights ago, again!
Same for Samson and Delilah and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. You just can’t help going back!
“Hurricane Harvey has prompted theater closures.”
Yes, that is the main reason why I have avoided going to the movies this weekend and for the past several years. Last movie I saw in a theater? Bolt (2008). Darn hurricanes.
It appears everything is being politicized by someone, even NASCAR.
Why can’t we just enjoy the races like the people did the old chariot races in 532 AD Constantinople!
They are boycotting Arnold himself and the movies. He wants to be never trump. But boycotts work both ways. Best for businesses to keep their mouths shut and work on making money, rather than enemies of customers by boycotting.
I haven’t been to a movie theater in almost 15 years. And I have no plans on ever going again.
Are you telling me Hollywood doesn’t pump out movies made by lefties, written by lefties and acted by lefties with subliminal and obvious anti Conservative themes? What universe do you live in?
I just joined moviepass, like Netflix for the cinema. $9.95 a month, 1 movie a day max. Has major theater chains. I’ll let you know how it is if that’s the deal I’d see a movie a week, at least.
I looked at the list of what was playing and said, "there is nothing worth seeing."
He said, "you are just being picky."
A few minutes later he said, "there really is nothing worth seeing."
Good points. I’m looking forward to all of the Easter eggs in Stranger Things season 2. :D
Yeah I’m not a huge fan of superhero movies either.
