Republicans Make Moves for 2020 as Trump Doubts Grow
New York Times ^ | August 5, 2017 | JONATHAN MARTIN and ALEXANDER BURNS

Posted on 08/05/2017 11:20:43 PM PDT by Pinkbell

Senators Tom Cotton and Ben Sasse have already been to Iowa this year, Gov. John Kasich is eyeing a return visit to New Hampshire, and Mike Pence’s schedule is so full of political events that Republicans joke that he is acting more like a second-term vice president hoping to clear the field than a No. 2 sworn in a little over six months ago.

President Trump’s first term is ostensibly just warming up, but luminaries in his own party have begun what amounts to a shadow campaign for 2020 — as if the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue weren’t involved.

The would-be candidates are cultivating some of the party’s most prominent donors, courting conservative interest groups and carefully enhancing their profiles. Mr. Trump has given no indication that he will decline to seek a second term.

But the sheer disarray surrounding this presidency, the intensifying investigation by the special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and the plain uncertainty about what Mr. Trump will do in the next week, let alone in the next election, have prompted Republican officeholders to take political steps that are unheard-of so soon into a new administration.

Asked about those Republicans who seem to be eyeing 2020, a White House spokeswoman, Lindsay Walter, fired a warning shot: “The president is as strong as he’s ever been in Iowa, and every potentially ambitious Republican knows that.”

But in interviews with more than 75 Republicans at every level of the party, elected officials, donors and strategists expressed widespread uncertainty about whether Mr. Trump would be on the ballot in 2020 and little doubt that others in the party are engaged in barely veiled contingency planning.

“They see weakness in this president,” said Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona. “Look, it’s not a nice business we’re in.”

Wishful thinking from the traitors like Bill Krystal. I’m with Trump in 2020 and against his opponents D or R.

"Trump is already doing campaign rallies and raising money. Every indication from him and the staff is that he is running in 2020. Trump is not a quitter and will fight the whole 8 years if he has to."

IMO, Trump would be doing the rallies and raising money regardless of a 2020 decision. He needs to do that to keep pressure on Congress to enact the will of the people who voted for him. These rallies also serve as a continuing reminder of his popularity which makes it more difficult for a rogue prosecutor to put forth some weak, but damaging charge against him/his administration. Of course, Trump isn't a quitter, but there are plenty of other angles the future may take. For example, Trump will have tremendous power as a king maker in 2020 if he decides hand off the baton to someone else. Personally, I'd like to see him in office for 8 years because the swamp is deeeeeep.

Nah, just recognize what’s happening over there.

The biggest political bombshell in the past few days is DWS and the Pakistani brothers - and $300,000 that one of them tried to get out of the country.

HUGE story.

He has ignored it all the way.

No, I don’t “love” them, but they are out there and should be addressed. I respond to the article ON A COMMENT FORUM DESIGNED TO RESPOND TO ARTICLES! The horror! I’m trying to understand how me thoroughly chiding a potential attempt by some in the GOP to primary Trump is me “making it seem I’m down for the struggle”. What do you do that makes you down for the struggle?

This is the New York SLIME stirring the pot. This is what they HOPE will happen. No “news” here, only more sabotage of the presidency.

I agree. Look at the fundraising numbers the RNC is pulling in right now. They are huge while the DNC is in debt. This is while Trump is in office, the man some are portraying to be a disaster. If they ever tried this crap with Trump, their fundraising numbers would drop like a rock. Also, Trump would run third party I believe. He would fight back if they did that.

I will say that I really like Ronna Romney McDaniel. Her Twitter feed is good. She is supportive of Trump, and she has been drawing attention to the Awan Brothers.

Exactly.

Trump voters are here to stay, long after Trump leaves the scene.

The old GOP is dead, and it ain’t coming back.

I have NEVER trusted Pence. I have said as much ever since he was named as VP pick. No one agreed with me.

I still do not trust him.
It is looking like I was right.

Trump and his policies are winning where it counts:

See this thread regarding energy policy:
http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3574912/posts

And note this will affect economic growth, foreign policy leverage and reduction of foreign entanglements.

See also Conservativetreehouse.com

Thread re Syria and Iraq: The US is winning - will affect /is already affecting flow of refugees

Thread re UN and North Korea: The US won a vote for the first time since...?? Will not only affect NK but shows how important Trumps trade policy vs China is.

Sanctions against NK will also affect Iran for better or worse, ie either Iran will comply which will impede its collaboration with NK re nuclear and missile technology, or it will break the sanctions imposed by a united UN GC. The latter would create great leverage for Trump vs the EU to impose direct sanctions on Iran.

Trump WH is winning because Trump and his allies understand a very simple but important concept: almost every policy area will affect every other policy area.

My advice to Republicans, keep doing the same old shit that you have been doing but don’t be surprised when your base hands you your own ass on a platter.

Please understand, it is not personal, it is just that patriotic Americans are so done with you bullshit.

Oh yeah..I am sure Trump’s 40% can’t wait to go and vote for Ben Sasse in 2020.

Too bad Jack couldn’t get that on tape. Once you’ve been condemned to hell by Sen. Sasse, there is no redemption possible.

Unfortunately, Sasse can’t be primaried until 2020, but he needs to be.

They honestly think they can just purge Trump and move forward like nothing happened with full support? It’s delusional.
