A week after HBO's botched announcement of its upcoming slavery drama Confederate, Amazon is partnering with Will Packer for its own alt-history series.
The streaming service is developing Black America, a drama that envisions an alternate history where newly freed African Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny. The drama hails from prolific producer Packer (Girls Trip, Ride Along) and Peabody-winning The Boondocks creator and Black Jesus co-creator Aaron McGruder.
In the show, the sovereign nation formed, New Colonia, has had a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with its looming Big Neighbor, both ally and foe, the United States. The past 150 years have been witness to military incursions, assassinations, regime change, coups, etc. Today, after two decades of peace with the US and unprecedented growth, an ascendant New Colonia joins the ranks of major industrialized nations on the world stage as America slides into rapid decline. Inexorably tied together, the fate of two nations, indivisible, hangs in the balance.
Deadline first announced news of the Amazon project in February but at the time, the producers wouldn't reveal any additional details about the series except that it would take place in an alternate universe in the vein of another Amazon series, The Man in the High Castle, which takes a look at what the world might look like had the outcome of World War II turned out differently.
HBO's announcement of Confederate, from Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, is what prompted the producers behind Black America to unveil the show's premise. It felt this was the appropriate time to make sure that audiences and the creative community knew that there was a project that preexisted and we are pretty far down the road with it, Packer told Deadline.
Amazon's interest in the series was first reported by Ankler.
Peanut butter, traffic signals, beat-boxing, spin-around rims, THE END..!
So we get Liberia in Louisiana?
And now those states look like Detroit and Chicago and Baltimore. And it's whitey's fault.
Election is 2018, don’t you know.
Must make racial havoc to keep everyone in line.
So, when is Bozo running for president?
Haiti is another example.
Boondocks = anime with afros
100% cultural appropriation
So, another failed African state... in Amerika. Purrrrrfect!
They can’t get ACTUAL history correct, so the do ‘fake’ history.. just like their ‘fake news’.
This show is going to have to sell the idea really well -- I just can't see a premise of three sovereign states being given away for reparations as plausible, even immediately after the war. I'll probably try to watch at least an episode or two, but it smells like it's going to be SJW nonsense.
The irony is that slavery was a dying institution before the Civil War. Even in the South.
Importation of new slaves was already banned.
More states were banning on it own their own.
Abolition movements, founded in churches, were making political gains in the South.
But the largest reason was that slavery was no longer economically feasible. The industrial age was dawning. Factories, mass production, automation, etc.
It made no economic sense to feed, house, cloth and provide medical care for an investment that did not cash flow.
And PS - I am sure HBO will IGNORE:
The first slave owner in America was a free black.
There were plenty of free blacks who owned slaves.
There were plenty of white slaves.
expertise in polar bear hunting..
An accurate alternate timeline would actually be:
Lincoln doesn’t die
Reconstruction actually works
Blacks become socially and economically integrated
Segregation ends many decades before it actually did
Of course that would make Republicans look good, so...
Facts are not racist: There is not a single successful majority-black country in the world. Of course knowing this, revisionist geniuses at Amazon will undoubtedly portray an alternative Sourhern universe as a Black utopia.
Isn't it already there?
And some people will believe it. Just like those idiots going around saying that “The Handmaiden’s Tale” is an accurate depiction of life in Trump’s America.
The death of Lincoln was a catastrophe for the South from which we've never recovered. Booth did more to harm the Southland than any single individual. Reconstruction never ended, and its yoke is still upon us.
I’m surprised they haven’t signed Hillary up to star in an alternate reality series where she really won the Presidency.
After “Man in a High Castle”, they almost had to do this.
