Man in the High Castle works because it 1) uses very subtle differences in history to effect the alternate timeline; 2) only looks at the divergent timeline about 25 years out; 3) is actually more sci-fi than alt-history per se (explaining why would be a massive spoiler).

This show is going to have to sell the idea really well -- I just can't see a premise of three sovereign states being given away for reparations as plausible, even immediately after the war. I'll probably try to watch at least an episode or two, but it smells like it's going to be SJW nonsense.

The irony is that slavery was a dying institution before the Civil War. Even in the South.

Importation of new slaves was already banned.

More states were banning on it own their own.

Abolition movements, founded in churches, were making political gains in the South.

But the largest reason was that slavery was no longer economically feasible. The industrial age was dawning. Factories, mass production, automation, etc.

It made no economic sense to feed, house, cloth and provide medical care for an investment that did not cash flow.

There were plenty of free blacks who owned slaves.

Why not just run the series that SHOULD have been history: "LIBERIA"? Dare to IMAGINE how much more productive and safe America would be if what Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and even Abraham Lincoln wanted had come true...millions of Blacks sent back to a free Liberia.
