Nashville mayor's son dies of apparent overdose
ABC News ^ | July 30, 2017 | Morgan Winsor

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said Sunday that her only child, 22-year-old Max Barry, has died of an apparent drug overdose.

An emotional statement released by the mayor and her husband, Bruce Barry, said their son died in Denver on Saturday night.

"Early this morning, we received news that no parents should ever have to hear. Our son Max suffered from an overdose and passed away. We cannot begin to describe the pain and heartbreak that comes with losing our only child. Our son was a kind soul full of life and love for his family and friends," the statement said. "Our family would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and would respectfully ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of our child and begin to understand a world without his laughter and love in our lives."

Max Barry graduated in June from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. It is unclear what exactly he overdosed on.

Funeral arrangements were pending as of Sunday and will be announced once plans are made, the mayor's office said.

With her husband and son by her side, Megan Barry was sworn in as Nashville's first female mayor in September 2015.

Denver Police Department spokeswoman Raquel Lopez declined to search the department's records and logs for the police report of Barry's death when asked by The Associated Press, saying that would violate the department's policy of not identifying victims.

The Cartels also have the protection of the Mexican government.

I didn’t write about Mexico but you are right, they are now growing poppies in their mountains and probably processing it in-country before shipping it into the U.S.

Mexican heroin used to be known as “black mud”. I don’t know what they call it today, but it is bad stuff and the cartels and the street gangs of the Democrat-ruined cities of LA and S.F., Oakland, etc. are the delivery boys.

I sent my kids to private school 12 years ago because I saw what was happening. It worked until 3 years ago and now the private school has 5 dealers. Kids can’t escape it ...they have to know what it does and stay away from it. Most students are clueless.

It’s prosecutable if not represented as advertised, that’s true for any peaceful transaction it’s called Rule of Law (rule by one-on-one voluntary contracts), correct?

Interestingly enough, WV and Utah are among the highest states in OD deaths. State comparisons at the following link. Click on the “2015 Deaths” tab for latest data =>

Megan has made Nashville into a sanctuary city, protecting the very ones who bring drugs into our country...

Her son died in Denver, another sanctuary city...

Maybe now the chickens have come home to roost, someone may give a thought for the American citizen children, and not illegal aliens who should not even be allowed to enter the US...

There, but by the grace of God go I, or someone I have cared about. It can happen to almost anyone, if you’re not careful and honest with yourself.
The easiest way is via pain management for some injury or chronic condition.

My children went to a Christian school for years...

in those days ...70/80s.. it was commonplace for parents to put their “lil darlin” kids who had been expelled from public schools into a Christian school thinking the new school would straighten them out...

instead the kid brought his problems into the Christian school...

this was South Carolina and I think a school couldn’t refuse to take some of the expelled students...finally the kid would be expelled from the private school too...

the bad kids influenced or preyed on the good kids ..

easy for a drug dealer 14 yo to get into a private school...

its got to be worse than the 70s...

No, it is not mostly prescription drugs. Most of the deaths are from synthetic opioid from Mexico with the help of Chinese precursors. some people with chronic pain can get physically used to opioid, but they often can function on a steady dose, large enough to keep the pain under control. Once the pain is gone, you slowly wean them off the narcotics.

Rush was using long acting narcotics after his back surgery, but was able to function, and was quickly detoxed as soon as he was accused of abusing drugs.

in contrast, in my hospital we lost two people from overdose who stole the drugs from cancer patients... one was a 13 year old girl whose friends pressured her to take it to get high. Sad.

She may not lack parenting skills, true.

But the son they raised who od’d is not a success story for them as parents.

People make choices. No one is an instant addict. They develop into one over repeated choices to expose themselves and take stuff they know they should not be messing with, for multiple reasons.

I have little sympathy because we have free will. I have never been forced to do drugs against my will. I dont play with fire like that. The real concrete risks are too great for the small temporary illusionary rewards.

Perhaps if this was imparted better by the people who supposedly cared the most for him, and those he chose to hang out with and claimed to be his friends...

It really is not that hard of a lesson to learn or explain. It doesnt take monumental effort to explain this to people, before they become addicts. And periodically reinforce it as they are growing up.

How do you know the school has 5 dealers.

If you do, have you named them to the police? So that something can be done to them?

I guess that is one way to deal with it. If it were my kid I would announce a bounty on the dealer. The dealer would be happy to turn himself in rather than deal with me.

THAT is how you deal with it.

I think some people should be a little more sympathetic. I understand what they are saying, but most people have made stupid choices in their lives, especially young people, and many end up regretting those things. I don't like addicts that make excuses while blaming everyone but themselves, but a lot of people who have struggled with addiction take responsibility and regret the day they touched the stuff. The pickup’s easy but the put down’s rough.

Everyone has vices, and while they may not all be on the same level of destructiveness, people should have more understanding of vices they may not share and can't relate to. Morbid obesity is an addiction the same any other drug as well.

Nothing in the article about whether the kid had an ADHD/ADD diagnosis while younger and was medicated.

Sooner or later this society is going to have to come to grips with the link between giving kids ADD/ADHD drugs and addiction later in life from other drugs.

We’ve fed so many of our kids ‘speed’ under the assumption that it was good for them for a condition that just didn’t really exist that much in generations part.

The vast majority of heroin consumed in the US is cultivated in Mexico and South America.
