Nashville mayor's son dies of apparent overdose
ABC News ^ | July 30, 2017 | Morgan Winsor

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said Sunday that her only child, 22-year-old Max Barry, has died of an apparent drug overdose.

An emotional statement released by the mayor and her husband, Bruce Barry, said their son died in Denver on Saturday night.

"Early this morning, we received news that no parents should ever have to hear. Our son Max suffered from an overdose and passed away. We cannot begin to describe the pain and heartbreak that comes with losing our only child. Our son was a kind soul full of life and love for his family and friends," the statement said. "Our family would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and would respectfully ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of our child and begin to understand a world without his laughter and love in our lives."

Max Barry graduated in June from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. It is unclear what exactly he overdosed on.

Funeral arrangements were pending as of Sunday and will be announced once plans are made, the mayor's office said.

With her husband and son by her side, Megan Barry was sworn in as Nashville's first female mayor in September 2015.

Denver Police Department spokeswoman Raquel Lopez declined to search the department's records and logs for the police report of Barry's death when asked by The Associated Press, saying that would violate the department's policy of not identifying victims.

It starts with drinking and heroin dealers are at the parties. Heroin is in pill form now so getting someone to take it is easy and very profitable for the dealer. Once or twice and the kid is hooked. Most kids are are open to this now as smoking pot and drinking is considered fine by the majority. Dealers are manipilative as they make good money selling. Once a kid is hooked, there is no going back. They were not that unhappy before, just going along with the crowd. Colleges are full of addicts now.

The heroin overdoses I saw in our local high school youth came from Mexico. Bush bombed a factory after 52 overdoes occured in one weekend. The overdoses were because of cutting the drug with other substances making it immediately fatal. The drug was so addictive kids would see others die from taking it, but they would take it anyway. Our youth are no match for this. Prayers that Trump prevails.

If not, why are addiction rates in West Virginia far higher than addiction rates in Utah?

Abuse is always going to be higher in states with less control on doctors. WVa has far fewer financial resources than most states.

ultimately, this is a problem of greed by the drug manufacturers, lobbyists and faithless lawmakers.

“ultimately, this is a problem of greed by the drug manufacturers, lobbyists and faithless lawmakers.”

Sorry, no lawmaker, faithless or not, is going to cause me to become addicted to heroin.

I’m an economist, I disagree. There’s a lot of bait-and-switch going on out there. That’s not a voluntary trade, it’s unlawful commerce. Agreed?

Drugs aren’t what they used to be back in the 70’s, physical addiction is almost impossible to shake if a dealer switches product that you bought, and you’re then hooked on a compound stronger and more addictive than planned. Here in NH, it’s big time. My friend in local EMT/Fire Rescue sees it - practically nightly. Makes you want to throw up, she says. A lot of trusting kids end up hopelessly repeat users or dead, it’s disgusting.

NAIL AND PROSECUTE THESE MEX CARTELS

How very sad. The scourge of drugs has resulted in so much misery, crime, and early deaths.

I understand how you feel. Similar experience. I abhor the predictable outcome of those addicted and am angry no one ever mentioned it until Trump. I believe the main reason fools want him out is because he is a threat to the heroin econony which supports many of our politicians.

Yes, the drug trade is unlawful commerce.

However, bait and switch does not cause a product to not be impacted by the laws of economics.

The transfer of a drug from a seller to a buyer is voluntary for both parties.

Yes. He had the military take out a plant producing the heroin. Multiple deaths were occuring at parties across the country. This was his response.

Yes, many are not aware of the epedemic and manipulation by dealers of the highly addictive drugs. Cartels have no boundaries. Back in the day they left the youth alone, no longer.
