Man Arrested for Using $2 Bills at Best Buy

Some people don’t know that two dollar bills are real, so when Mike Bolesta used over 50 of them to make a purchase at a Best Buy store, an encounter with the police and Secret Service ensued.

I experience the same situation all the time, too. They stop, look dumbfounded, then take another look at the money in their hands. They start to say something, stop, then finally say “that’s too much!”

Can you imagine a nitwit saying $22 is “too much” for a $12 purchase Andy try to hand the $2 back.

I’m not as kind or as patient as you. I usually say forcefully “Think! Think about it!” About half of the kids figure it out and get a look of enlightened satisfaction on their faces. The others should be grave diggers.

But there’s more.

From your link:

“A Best Buy manager refused comment last week. But, according to a Baltimore County police arrest report, suspicions were roused when an employee noticed some smearing of ink. So the cops were called in. One officer noticed the bills ran in sequential order.”

Smeared ink (supposedly) and sequential numbers.

Looks like they thought it was counterfeit.

Still dumb and there may have been some personal animosity involved.

It doesn’t seem to be because they didn’t know two dollar bills were real.

President Jefferson and Monticello are on the front and back of the $2 bill.

How old are you? :-)

They had Monticello through 1966. Since they restarted production in 1976 it has had the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

IF ONLY there was some way or technology to find out information very quickly. Something everyone had access too...

I refer them to the computer because that’s how they relate to the world. i find very few people under 40 who can do any numbers in their head or even understand concepts. My son and his wife are exceptions. they both grew up on new math or whatever it was 15 years ago but they are levelheaded and have common sense.

The certificate was exchangeable for 1 dollar silver, lawful money of the United States which at the time was a Morgan or Peace dollar.

There should be a means of exchanging lawful money of the United States for the current legal tender Eagles. That would either involve printing new certificates, or honoring the 300 million in lawful money left in the system after the inception of the Federal Reserve (it’s in the legislation). You can exchange Federal Reserve notes for the coins, but that exchange rate fluctuates ;-)

I can top all of these stories qith my true story. Yeara ago when we were in Las Vegas we picked up a few “Las Vegas Bucks” offered by a casino. They had a drawing of the face of a cowboy and scroll work vaguely suggestive of that on US currency, along with other nonsense. We had a family printing business so when we returned home we made an offset plate of the bill and printed a stack of them. We put them in our window facing the sidewalk as an attention getter. They were in the window for a few months before we got a visit from some Treasury Department agents who wanted to know whether we we printing any currency other than the Las Vegas Bucks in the window. We were not arrested ao I guess my story doesn’t top the others, although we were challenged for currency that was blatantantly phony. They warned us to be careful what we reprinted. Apparently a passerby had reported us as counterfeiters.

Well, I'm an old man and I haven't seen a traveler's check in maybe forty years. Credit cards pretty well killed them off when Visa/MC went global. Why would you even have a traveler's check at this late date?

President Jefferson and Monticello are on the front and back of the $2 bill.

It's been a while, but I thought that the back has the signing of the Constitution.

I believe that Monticello is on the back of the nickel.

Somebody once paid me around $700 with a postal money order. Turns out my bank wouldn’t take it - said they were known to be too easy to forge. And...turns out the post office wouldn’t take it because they didn’t have enough money in their drawer. I had to call and drive around town for several days, until I found a post office with enough money. Made me think they shouldn’t be in the money order business.

I do think the government should be forced to honor the pledge of exchanging it for silver.

That pledge expired in June 1968

#24. Re “most young adults say 16-22 or so do not know what a phone booth is”.

More importantly, they don’t know who “John Wilkes Booth” was.

Being asked about something is not the same as being arrested

I call BS. Even if the cashier didn’t know the manager would have.

Which Best Buy what city?

No BS. I've run into it myself. Clerks and store managers don't recognizing $2 bills because they have no till slot for them and seldom run into them. Many people consider them bad luck. I helped a guy out once who only had a couple of $2 bills at a McDonald's when he was buying his lunch and none of the employees recognized them as real money. They were laughing at how obviously fake they were! I exchanged a $5 bill for them and some change which he had in his pocket, which was enough for him to buy lunch. When I made the offer, I spoke loud enough so the employees could hear me. The employees thought I was nuts. When I ordered my meal, the clerk told me I could get in serious trouble buying "phony money." I told her it's real and showed her an older $2 bill I keep in my wallet, a 1953 series, that was the first money I ever got paid for my own work earned helping my mom with an afternoon of gardening when I was seven years old (I still have it). She was shocked.

Another time at a Dairy Queen, neither the clerk nor the store manager would take the guy ahead of me's REAL silver dollars at face value. They said they were "too big to be real dollar coins," and argued that "real" dollar coins were close to the size of quarters, referring to the Susan B. Anthony flop, what we jokingly called the "Jimmy Carter Quarter," or the "JC Penny," due to them often mistakenly given out in change AS quarters! ,p> Those Dairy Queen employees were shocked when I gave him ten bucks apiece for the four he had with him! $10 was about the spot price for an ounce of 90% silver then. Numismatic value was higher. One of those cartwheels I later learned was worth $65. . . The others from $15 to $20 each, yet these bozos in the store did not have a clue these coins were real, much less still legal tender!

When my Granddaughter was born I gave her Mother a one dollar silver certificate. Unfortunately, it is worth a dollar. I do think the government should be forced to honor the pledge of exchanging it for silver.

Uh, actually, not quite right, true only as legal tender goes it's worth a dollar, but on the market it's another story. Silver certificate currency is worth more than face value to currency collectors, sometimes a lot more. I was amazed when I saw auctions of single silver certificate one dollar bills going for $5 to $20 each or even more, depending on the condition, year, color of over-print ink, and other markings, etc. What's even better, because they're legal tender, no sales tax can be charged no matter how much the price. Same for US coins. Even Federal Reserve notes have premium value bills that collectors want. I have a $1 silver certificate on which the ink mix for the backside went screwy, one color that's supposed to be in the color mix, blue, ran out, so the backside of my bill isn't a greenback, it's a yellowback!

So I go to the hardware store to buy some shiny new nuts and bolts for a hobby project. The total is $2.23. I give the the clerk a twenty and a quarter.

People who do this piss off every cashier in the world and every poor SOB who has the misfortune to stand behind them.

My bank carries $2 bills and I stock up all the time.

They’re great for tips or for just entertainment to see if they’re going to take it.
