Sorry I have to say this. But FR has become nearly unusable these days.
You used to have a feeling that within 30 seconds to a minute, your page would be resolved and loaded.
But no more. I don't know how many times lately, I have hit refresh or picked a new thread only to wait and wait and wait and then I give up and go to another site.
The powers that be recommend limiting your window options to twenty. My reply is, if that's the problem, the just taking the option away and making it twenty should be the solution.
And I know about DOS attacks - they can easily be filtered by a front-end server - so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyways, whatever it is, it's getting series. And Hugh!
Yep, and it does when it’s not bottlenecking somewhere. This is probably the lightest script I have been on in years and years. :)
Well l worked in IT so l know something about DOS attacks but FR has been plagued with problems for about 9 months so it’s definitely time for some new Hardware and software changes.
I have an old IE-based tabbed browser I usually use for FR. It is loading slow today.
I have a Firefox-based browser in the other half of my monitor with FR, but I am not logged in to it.
The Firefox-based browser loads somewhat faster, but breaks at 20 items.
If I want to respond to a thread, I have to copy the active URL from the Firefox-based browser and paste it to a new window in the IE-based browser where I am logged in. It may take seconds to post or several minutes or it may just spin.
Agreed. Fifteen minutes ago the page wouldn’t even load. The “is it down” site showed Free Republic as down for everyone. Now it seems to be working.
I agree with you.
Sadly, FR continues doing the same “maintenance” over & over & over and expecting different results. Einstein had a name for that behaviour....but I digress.
It’s waaaay past time to consider a qualified outside IT consultant to correctly analyze the problem and begin to move the site in a direction to bring long term stability to the site.
If the “same old, same old” continues, freepers will begin leaving due to the inability to run a basic website.
I hope an outside IT consultant arrives soon.....
Russians are causing the problem.
FR very, very slow on my Windows machine, using either IE or Firefox.
When I access FR on iPad or iPhone, delay is normal. No problem.
I can’t explain this, I’m only reporting my results. YMMV.
Fine for the, not for me.
All depends on what your used to.
Fine for you may suck for me.
I had a problem last week but works fine now. Are you sure you are holding your mouth the right way? That seems to help me. : ). Sorry you are having problems.
Shouldn’t need to
Whenever I have a problem, I reload and click on “Headers.” Seems to always fix whatever is going on.
Wrong
Zactly.
Lots of us work in telecom/Internet, MSP etc.
We’ve been giving great ideas to JR and JR, with biggest that the site has got to be multihomed on Virtual/Shared servers and they can keep that ridiculously archaic physical server in some dumb cave running on DC like the original Colo’s were.
DOS attacks often have this effect. I think it may be the attacker’s goal. They’ve currently got us in a bad way, but we have not yet begun to fight. Don’t give up the ship!
This afternoon FR was next to unusable on my W7 box and marginally better on my Linux. Now I am on a box that isn’t mine and is running W10 and IE which I won’t use on mine. FR is operating now as it should. Is FR reconfigured especially for W10 now?
High speed, bullet train fast in Minnesota.
Thank you, Jim Robinson, and all who provide support for this free conservative news site. Pay no heed to these negative naybobs of negativism who appear to be nothing but entitled leeches on your coattails.
Not really a techie, but a gut feeling...
I log onto FR from several different computers. I seem to be having the worst luck with the ones that are running Norton anti-virus. I have had Norton cause problems with other sites as well.
Of course now that I am reading all these comments, perhaps it is more universal than I thought.
Shouldn’t need to pay taxes either but it makes life easier if you do.
