Sessions discussed Trump campaign-related matters with Russian Ambass., U.S. intel intercepts show
Washington Post ^

Russia’s ambassador to Washington told his superiors in Moscow that he discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow, with Jeff Sessions during the 2016 presidential race, contrary to public assertions by the embattled attorney general, according to current and former U.S. officials.

Ambassador Sergey Kislyak’s accounts of two conversations with Sessions — then a top foreign policy adviser to Republican candidate Donald Trump — were intercepted by U.S. spy agencies, which monitor the communications of senior Russian officials both in the United States and in Russia. Sessions initially failed to disclose his contacts with Kislyak and then said that the meetings were not about the Trump campaign.

One U.S. official said that Sessions — who testified that he has no recollection of an April encounter — has provided “misleading” statements that are “contradicted by other evidence.” A former official said that the intelligence indicates that Sessions and Kislyak had “substantive” discussions on matters including Trump’s positions on Russia-related issues and prospects for U.S.-Russia relations in a Trump administration.

Sessions has said repeatedly that he never discussed campaign-related issues with Russian officials and that it was only in his capacity as a U.S. senator that he met with Kislyak.

“I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,” Sessions said in March when he announced that he would recuse himself from matters relating to the FBI probe of Russian interference in the election and any connections to the Trump campaign.

Bear in mind that what the Washington Post reports is exactly what the CIA wants you to believe.

Because Hillary was scheduled to win. No need for public release, the Intel community would simply have a chit it could trade with Sessions in the future.

So, we are to take the word of the ambassador of “a hostile power” as gospel?

Kislyak is huge—obviously likes dinner our in DC.

How do we know he was not embellishing his conversations to keep his cushy gig in DC?

Sorry, but this “evidence” proves nothing.

It is ones ided and suspect.

More stupidity from the Post.

The Democrats have assumed the right to fabricate accusations to induce weak-kneed Republicans to abdicate their duties in favor in favor of people who are out to get them. Our recuser-in-chief took the bait.

“Or the Russian is lying.”

Classic disinformation. Media is too stupid to pick up on it.

"Trump should nominate Chris Christie or Rudy Giuliani. Those will be crazy confirmation hearings!"

I thought the issue (or one of the issues) with Christie was that he put Jared Kushner's dad in jail and that's why he didn't get a White House job. If Sessions resigns and Trump recess-appoints Christie, the Senate can do confirmation hearings "when they get around to it" (which could be never) so the expected confirmation nastiness might not ever need to happen.

Also, no possibility of a fistfight between Christie and Kushner because Christie would be at DOJ, not the WH. He might be unpopular in some circles if he fires Mueller -- but I think that since Bridgegate and since Beachgate Christie actually enjoys all the hate.

Recess-appointing Giuliani would probably be smoother -- although I don't know if he would want the job. He may have some health issues.

Deep State knifing Sessions or Trump knifing him to get him to resign to get a new AG confirmed and take control over the investigation.

Not the latter. Trump could just fire him rather than go through this. After all anything supposedly done by Sessions that is bad reflects on Trump himself since Trump chose him.

No ... this represents deep state leaks unless the Post made it all up.

Its sad to come to terms that the U.S. is almost as corrupt as Russia today.

Becoming more and more clear the intelligence agencies and establishment D.C. is hell bent on destroying this outsider president.

Be ready

I think they [Giuliani and Christie] both would shut this Mueller nonsense down. Sessions is weak and the democrats ate him alive. HORRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT. He’s too much of a southern gentleman for this political environment.

You have it. Trump MUST HAVE a nasty, totally ruthless, go for the carotid, Yankee lawyer, not a southern gentleman, as AG. I'm a transplanted Yankee, having been born in IL and moved from WI to TN in 1987.

The “Hearsay Herald”.

I thought since the USSR died the NYTimes didn’t believe every word Russian officials uttered.

I would love to see Gowdy in the AG position. Although he has been in mostly toothless hearings, in a position to act, I believe he would. He certainly comes in armed with the facts. I do doubt that he would accept it, however.
