I don't see how you can hold the bear responsible for something he did in his sleep.
A Ranger told my wife recently that Dawn liquid soap attracts them. Really attracts them.
Black bears are not super tough. I have a 44 mag, but it is hard to wear when working in the yard. I have settled on swapping ammo in my 40 S&W pocket pistol. For the city I carry normal SD HPs. In the yard I swap magazines to have Double Tap 200 grain Hard Cast wide flat nose gas check loads that are rated at 1000 fps out of a 3-inch barrel in my gun. This load is probably good for 3 feet of penetration and should do good against thick skulls.
