Slave quarters of Sally Hemings, the maid who gave birth to six of Thomas Jefferson’s children found

Archaeologists have discovered an area in Thomas Jefferson's plantation home that was once the living quarters of Sally Hemings - a slave with whom he is believed to have had six children. Her room, which was built in 1809 and was 14 feet, 8 inches wide and 13 feet long, was next to Thomas Jefferson's room. However, the bedroom went unnoticed for decades and the area was even made into a men's bathroom in 1941.

You’re engaging in speculation. Knock yourself out.

Not understanding your desperate attempt to disbelieve genetics. What is that desperation you have to insist sex is not a huge force between a man and a woman, alone a foot or so apart for years?

Genetics. Do you understand it? Let’s return to that woman’s photo posted to this thread. Now, how do you suppose lineal descent from Thomas Jefferson would be proved in her instance, scientifically? Does she even have his X chromosome? Doubtful.

What’s the worst? That he had an affair with his late wife’s younger sister? She was white in all but name!

He freed their children, and allowed the older two to walk away into white society long before he died, giving them the money to do so.

He seems to have tried to do the best in a bad situation.

While genetics was a huge part of my undergraduate degree, yes, I need to state that the science of genetics has improved exponentially since I graduated. I attempt weakly to keep up. I’m thrilled to see Darwin lose utter superiority and for Lamarck to posthumously be recieving his due,

Please explain why you fight a bit desperately to have TJ not to have had sex with Sally Hemings? It appears by all evidence they did. Why does it matter to you? It doesn’t matter to me.

You very aptly provided the answer to your own question in comparing Thomas Jefferson to:

- an abstract male taking advantage of a girl in his care
- Bill Cosby, rapist
- Roman Polanski, child rapist.

Beg pardon, but I heard a distinct Joy Behar screech in that, and over time I’ve learned to distrust such emotion and illogic.

Deal with the genetics of the matter. How does a female over 200 years hence prove lineal descent from Thomas Jefferson?

I look forward to your answer.

You seem very race-obsessed, here. I’ve made clear that I have some mixed ancestry myself. So, I’d suggest trying a different tack. What else might be offensive about your contentions?

You are twisting my words.

At first I thought you were insisting TJ wouldn’t have sex with a young woman entrusted in some way to him. In his case, through the bond of slavery. Having been an underage sex slave myself I know that “prominent” or “important” men can and do take advantage of these situations.

And other than owning people being desperately wrong, these two lived together, slept inches apart, surely hormones were flowing. It is not unheard of for people to hook up or even fall in love in such situations.

Answer MY question which takes no math or research. Why do you insist TJ would never have hooked up with Sally? What do you personally fear about it?

I can’t answer your question perfectly but people use both science (DNA) and circumstantial evidence of the type of documentation used to connect heritage on say Ancestry.com in order to find common ancestors. Often it becomes close to proof, even if a few facts are circumstantial. Paper trails can involve lying or subterfuge or people assuming fatherhood by the wrong man. A preponderance of evidence, though, can get one very close to absolute genetic truth.

I *think* I may have mixed raced ancestry also, albeit in the 1700’s. On paternal GF side, ancestor is listed as “m” in race box. Then my maternal GF was part Indian.

Most people who object to Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings evidence of offspring do so on the grounds of his stated opposition to miscegenation. I bring up the fact that she was by all appearances white to show why he might have made an exception to his previously stated policies.

Whoever the father of Sally’s children was, I hope she didn’t hate his guts since she didn’t seem to have much choice in the matter. It’s too bad she didn’t leave an account of her interesting life.

Actually studies have proven that his nephew was no where around when the children were fathered, but letters and other documents show that Thomas Jefferson was always at Monticello during the conception of Sally Hemmings white children.

Where did you hear that? I have heard it was the exact opposite.

I assume they’re drawn to a few dozen out of context quotes...

His most well known starts with, "When in the course of human events," and that ain't too shabby.

Your opinion is not worth the keys on your keyboard.

What a strange coincidence that this story was published on July 4th.

Your weak retort:
“Since then, a committee commissioned by the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society, after reviewing essentially the same material, reached different conclusions, namely that Sally Hemings was only a minor figure in Thomas Jefferson’s life and that it is very unlikely he fathered any of her children. This committee also suggested in its report, issued in April 2001 and revised in 2011, that Jefferson’s younger brother Randolph (1755-1815) was more likely the father of at least some of Sally Hemings’s children.”

From Wikipedia:

In the fall of 2001, the National Genealogical Society Quarterly reported that the "weight of historical evidence" and the DNA study were sufficient to conclude that Jefferson had a long relationship with Hemings and fathered all her children. They strongly criticized a report issued that year by the newly formed Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society (TJHS); they said it failed to follow best practices in historical and genealogical analysis. Helen F.M. Leary, a certified genealogist, concluded: "the chain of evidence securely fastens Sally Hemings's children to their father, Thomas Jefferson."[21] In a 2002 lecture at the Library of Congress, Leary said: "[M]uch of the evidence marshaled against the Hemings-Jefferson relationship has proved to be flawed by reason of bias, inaccuracy or inconsistent reporting. Too many coincidences must be accounted for and too many unique circumstances "explained away" if a competing theory is to be accepted. The sum of the evidence points to Jefferson as the father of Hemings' children."[22]

an affair with his late wife’s younger sister

Or, arguably, they married clandestinely according to natural law - she being a free woman in Paris at the time.

Weak retort?

I quoted from the source Bodleian_Girl cited in her post.

Then check post 230 from GJones2.

Chances are one in eight that TJ is the father?

I encourage you to acquire a deeper understanding of the founding, the post-revolutionary era, and the personalities and relationships of the founders.

perhaps then you would understand there was more to thomas jefferson than a single document, or a sentence in the document. and then, perhaps, you wouldn’t say stupid sh*t.
