Small Plane Crashes on 405 Freeway Near John Wayne Airport; 2 Hospitalized
KTLA ^

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz said the plane had crashed and two people in their early 60s were hospitalized with traumatic injuries. Both patients had vitals when they were removed from the plane, he said.
Its not clear what caused the plane to crash, he said.
As far as exactly what occurred to the aircraft, thats up to the FAA for investigation, Kurtz said.
The planes wreckage was on the southbound freeway near the MacArthur Boulevard exit, on the path that aircraft use when landing at John Wayne Airport.
The Cessna 310 aircraft landed on the freeway short of the runway at 9:35 a.m, the airport tweeted. The airfield was temporarily closed to arrivals, but departures were not affected.

I saw this happen. The plane was very low and appeared to have just taken off since it was in the air east of the airport maybe 200’ above the ground. . It was very low and I said, “Man that plane is awfully low to be banking that hard.” It continued as though it was making a U-turn returning to the airport and kept getting lower and banking harder until it hit the median and burst into flames.

May have lost an engine. Even though its a twin engine the 310 will not fly on on engine. They call it the sweet potato.

The plane seems to be owned by a local man from Huntington Beach through his LLC. So he’d be familiar with the area and has probably used the airport many times in the past.
Wishing both occupants a speedy recovery.

Yep. Something(s) broke and at the worst possible time.
Fwiw, 310s can be demanding even when everything is working perfectly.
Sure are pretty, tho...

Yes, you can fly it on only one engine ... all the way to the scene of the crash. You’ll beat the ambulance there by a good 15 minutes ... maybe half an hour.
