Chart of the Week: Who Is Most Likely to Switch From Windows to a Mac?
Verto Analytics ^ | June 21, 2017 | By Connie Hwong

Posted on 06/30/2017 1:20:52 AM PDT by Swordmaker

Has Microsoft finally caught up to Apple? The latest reviews of Microsoft’s new laptops hint that Apple’s cachet (and price points) may be wearing thin among consumers. Verto Analytics conducted a Smart Poll of current Windows owners (among U.S. adults, ages 18 and above) and asked them if they planned to buy an Apple as their next computer (either laptop or desktop) in the next 6-24 months. We also asked current Mac owners about their intentions to switch to a Windows machine within the next 6-24 months.

Windows Owners Are More Likely to Make a Switch to Mac

According to the results of the Verto Smart Poll, nearly all (98% or more) current Mac owners intend to stay with Macs as their next computer. However, nearly 21% of current Windows laptop owners and 25% of current Windows desktop owners responded that they intend to switch to a Mac within the next six months. And of those current Windows owners, consumers in the upper income bracket (those with an average income of $150,000 or more) showed the highest likelihood of switching to a Mac: 20% of respondents intended to switch. Lower income groups (those making $20,000 or less annually) also report higher probability of switching to Mac: about 14% of these respondents intended to switch. However, a further drilldown shows that these lower income respondents are also in their teens or twenties, suggesting parental assistance.

They took a wonderful machine, the MacBook , and stripped it of its usefulness. All in the name of esthetics.

Do you know you can still buy a MacBook Pro 15-inch from Apple that still has most of those features, except an internal DVD drive? Two USB 3 ports, SDXC port as well as the newer stuff. But I hear you. Over a year ago I bought my wife a newer MacBook to replace her 2006 model. She likes the peripherals so I bought her a MacBook from Apple that had the extras, including internal DVD. But after that they dropped the model offering the DVD internally. Me, I rarely use a DVD anymore and am content using an external drive attached to my desktop (I share the drive to my laptop over the LAN). Plus I still have the older laptops, for instance viewing carpentry DVD tutorials out in my workshop in the back yard.

Because we haven't had a good operating system food fight in a few weeks ... PING!

WINDOWS PING LIST PING

ARRRGGH!! Photobucket has stopped supporting free 3rd party image display, so give me a little while to get the graphics back!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Thanks to Swordmaker for the ping.

Umm, as the guy who runs the Windows Ping List, I beg to differ. Granted the level of personal venom is far less from Mac fans on Windows threads, than the reverse. But a considerable number of Mac users feel that they need to jump on Windows threads to remind Windows users that Windows *ahem* has its drawbacks. :-)

I paid the Photobucket “ransom” . It took awhile to display...I had to refresh the page to get some to display again.

What annoys me is that all my prior posts now come up broken by default, because I can't go back into the old FreeRepublic pages and update the URLs. *sigh*

Photobucket's site is a tsunami of ads that overwrite my screen. What a pain.

So I'm dropping them and plan to spin up my own photo (and other content) cloud server. If I'm gonna pay for a service, I'd rather pay Amazon for an AWS VM and Godaddy for a domain name, and have total control of it myself. And besides, doing that is cheaper than paying Photobucket!

For the pictures for the Mac and Electric Universe Ping lists. . . So far, no problems. Free. . .

Probably ransom ware. You are having unprotected browsing with Win 7.

No sign of any bugs - Windows defender stays updated and use Avira Browser Safety plug-in.

If the computer goes belly up it ill be from age, not "bugaboos".

I have thousands of pictures and many folders in Photobucket. I post graphics most days. 10 years of archives would be wiped out and all my files useless for the FReepathon.

I have a bad back and reinventing the wheel was just too much...The good news is that there are NO ADS now.

PS I am 84 and Windows 10 suits my needs just fine.

LINUX is FREE. Most peoples’ eyes glaze over when I tell them that. XP was the last stable Windows. Been using LINUX now since they created a GUI.

I have 10 on all my pc’s. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. I turned Coratana off and Bing is just as fine as any other search engine.I paid under $300 for this laptop I’m on. I can edit photos, recode movies and do everything else I need to. Why pay a grand for a Mac?

Same here. Got a great windows laptop last Christmas for $280. 8GB memory and 7th gen i3 cpu
I use Bing all the time. I use google once in a while for a tough search. I use Track Me Not on Chrome and Firebox so no one can tell what my real searches are. Believe it or not google likes to f with Track Me Not so I dumped google.

My only gripe about Windows 10 is the file explorer. It is larded down with ribbons and craps. It is way too busy. Windows 7 did it simpler and better. Other than that Windows 10 is good as was Windows 7. Apple eco-system is the land of the absurd obsessive compulsives. Their latest genious "innovation", the active LED ribbon on their Mac Books, flopped.

If I had that much stored up there, I'd do the same as you. My storage is much smaller (less than 100 files, no folders) so it's pretty easy to migrate to another site/server.

I agree, that makes sense for you. If I may ask, which plan did you get?

Congratulations and wow, that's terrific! My mom celebrates her 93rd in a few weeks (I'm a mere 65 myself). Carry on!!

The Mac fans on Windows threads aren't sadistic with hatred, as are many Windows fans on Mac threads. I'm one who sometimes goes to Windows threads, although I use both platforms. In general, the Windows fans who jump on Mac threads never use Macs, and indeed they state they will never use Apple products. The reverse is not true, in general, because many Mac users on Windows threads are there because they use both platforms, and in general stay away if not using Windows at all. I'm sure Swordmaker can attest to immense numbers of Windows troublemakers on Apple threads, many are there simply to invade and not to share or gain real expertise.

Plus 50 offers 50GB of Storage and No Linking or 3rd Party Hosting ($5.99/mo)
Plus 100 offers 100GB of Storage, Unlimited Linking and No 3rd Party Hosting ($9.99/mo)
Plus 500 offers 500GB of Storage, Unlimited Linking and 3rd Party Hosting ($39.99/mo)

Interesting. I'm paying Apple iCloud $0.99/mo for 50GB storage. I can upgrade to 200GB for $2.99/mo, or 2TB for $9.99/mo.

And people say Apple is expensive. Not in this case.

Oh, trust me, I know :-) I was a regular on the Apple threads for many years before I started up the Windows list, being the owner of over a dozen Apple products (3 Mac Minis, 2 old iMacs, 2 MacBooks, 2 iPads, 3 iPods, an iPhone, never mind KBs and magic-mice) among my even larger collection of Windows and Linux machines. Actually I started shortly after I signed on as a FReeper by joining ShadowAce's "Tech" ping list, mostly Linux stuff, and later joined Swordmaker's Apple ping list, which was back maybe better part of a decade ago? Swordmaker probably remembers better than I do...

Which is to say, I was there during all the bloodiest of the Apple Thread Flame Wars, including JimRob's Cease Fire Post and all the rest. Yep, I know. :-)

Wait... I feel like I'm about to get smarter...

Do you mean an iCloud user (you, me, Swordmaker) can upload and store arbitrary images (JPGs, PNGs, animated GIFs) to their iCloud account storage, and then hot-link to them (<A HREF="URL"> style) from arbitrary website pages (e.g. FreeRepublic thread pages), and Apple doesn't mind? Sorta like a private Photobucket?

How do you do that? All I see at iCloud are apps (Pages, Numbers, Notes, Contacts...).
