AUGUSTA, Maine A father and son reeled in an unexpected catch on the Kennebec River over the weekend a rusted bolt-action rifle.
The unidentified pair were fishing near the northern end of Canal Street when they brought in a Remington 700 with scope and bipod still attached and several rounds in the magazine, according to the Kennebec Journal.
They brought the rifle to police, who are trying to figure out who owned the rifle and how it got into the river.
Augusta police Lt. Chris Read told the paper that the rifle was possibly related to some type of burglary, theft or other crime.
The rifle was never reported stolen, according to police.
Yup.
Ding ding ding. Any unsolved murders in that area? Probably impossible to get good ballistics out of it at this point.
“The first thing I would do if I came across a gun would be to clear the thing.”
That’s because you like most Freepers understand basic firearm safety.
For the few Freepers and/or lurkers who don’t here are the rules:
(1) EVERY firearm should be considered loaded until you PERSONALLY clear it. This includes even seeing a friend clear it and hand it to you. YOU CLEAR IT YOURSELF. (Actually had a friend “clear” a shotgun, but there was a shell in the chamber he missed. Found that out when I cleared it.)
(2) NEVER point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
(3) NEVER place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Note: A few variations of these rules exist. They cover the same basic points though.
I’m going to add a non-standard rule:
(4) PRACTICE with your firearms, so if the unfortunate time comes you need to do so, you are competent.
“Now, how to clean, gut and fillet the thing?”
Then the discussion should turn to what sauce is best with that caliber and what wine to serve?
That will buff right out
Chuckle
“Several FReepers have lost MANY guns in boating accidents.”
IIRC. If I Remember Correctly, many such reports have been posted on Free Republic in recent years.
For all these long years, I’ve thought everybody was just joking about that “boating accident.”
DB?
DB Cooper?
Date of Birth?
DoucheBag?
LOL...best of the thread!
Best pun of the day!
LOL, right on cue.
This thread could be lots of fun!
The solved mystery of a wife’s death?
That will rub out.
1907 Sling? You sure know your stuff....
OK! Which of you Freepers lost this in your canoe accident?
What a shame.
That hurt, no doubt.
