AUGUSTA, Maine A father and son reeled in an unexpected catch on the Kennebec River over the weekend a rusted bolt-action rifle.
The unidentified pair were fishing near the northern end of Canal Street when they brought in a Remington 700 with scope and bipod still attached and several rounds in the magazine, according to the Kennebec Journal.
They brought the rifle to police, who are trying to figure out who owned the rifle and how it got into the river.
Augusta police Lt. Chris Read told the paper that the rifle was possibly related to some type of burglary, theft or other crime.
The rifle was never reported stolen, according to police.
The result, no doubt, of a boating accident.
That image reminds me of the great loss I suffered in my own boating accident.
Nah, this was a fishing accident where the center fuel tank blew up.
My thought exactly, proof that boating accidents happen!
When then find my missing backpack stuffed with $1M in cash, I’ll come forward....
Yes! Several FReepers have lost MANY guns in boating accidents.
Nice ... has a 1907 sling. Somebody was serious.
But if it was in hunting country I would think it probably was someone tripping on the rocks and having the weapon go flying into deep water. Or a hunter crossing a supposedly frozen river.... he thrashed himself out but lost the rifle.(or perhaps he’ll turn up further down stream )
I’ll take “Disposing of Evidence” for $100, Alex.
Looks like whoever owned it carried it with the barrel pointed down. Fishermen were using jigs?
It appears that the bolt was open when it landed in the river. Interesting.
The gun from the grassy knoll
Pretty much
D.B.?
I have the exact GPS coordinates of that find. Its mine I tell ya. Remember that canoe accident I told everyone about?
Do they have Northern Pike there?
I had to shoot one of those ten or eleven times when it charged me.
Or pulled open when retrieved, if the bolt could be worked. The first thing I would do if I came across a gun would be to clear the thing.
Does the scope still work?
I had to check to see that mine was still in place. That’s a dead ringer for mine.
