In Switzerland, a giant new machine is sucking carbon directly from the air

The world's first commercial plant for capturing carbon dioxide directly from the air opened yesterday, refueling a debate about whether the technology can truly play a significant role in removing greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere.

First two questions that arose in my mind: 1) Where do they put the carbon dioxide?; and 2) Have they overcome the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?

1) They put it into a greenhouse, so the overwhelming majority goes back to the atmosphere from whence it came.

2) No, they are doing the equivalent of trying to gather all the gold dispersed in the ocean to become rich. It will not happen. Supporters say that the process only needs to be made less expensive. Mild understatement based on ignorance promoted by the promoters.

The irony is that the facility IS called “a plant.”

It’s not........if they really cared about the environment they’d go plant trees.....

Watch all the plants die.

I think the real question is what is causing this mass insanity? Is it a microbe like toxoplasmosis? Is it the relentless barrage of mind-effing the media spews out? Is it inbreeding? Something is causing this mass break with reality. My front lawn does what the article claims.

Here we go again. Not a word about the energy that this uses. Not a word about the energy costs that went into building this.

Not a word about whether it’s more cost-effective to plant trees.

“900 tons = 200 cars = 4.5 tons per car, 1 ton cost $1000 = $4500 per car per year”
Bingo.
Even if they were able to reduce the cost per ton and make it “commercially viable” - commercially viable to who? For what?

It captures C02, and then pipes it down the road, where it is released again into the atmosphere.

Just a guess, but they probably got $20 million from some Globalist Enviro scam-fund for this.

Among the skeptics are Massachusetts Institute of Technology senior research engineer Howard Herzog, who called it a “sideshow” during a Washington event earlier this year.

He estimated that total system costs for air capture could be as much as $1,000 per ton of CO2, or about 10 times the cost of carbon removal at a fossil fuel plant.

“At that price, it is ridiculous to think about right now. We have so many other ways to do it that are so much cheaper,” Herzog said.

He did not comment specifically on Climeworks but noted that the cost for air capture is high partly because CO2 is diffuse in the air, while it is more concentrated in the stream from a fossil fuel plant.

...

Did you hear that? He said CO2 is diffuse in the air. In other words, there isn’t much of it.

In Switzerland, a giant new machine is sucking carbon directly from the air

Can it redistribute hundreds of billions of dollars each year from the United States to poor African countries?

If not, what good is it?

Now, if someone could find a way to use that carbon as feedstock for a 3D printer to manufacture diamonds, they’d really have something.

I love technology, and am totally cool with this, see where this leads. If it works, and _if_ in, say, 50-100 years we find out that we really need this, then we can deploy it on a massive scale, fix da earf.

Engineers have been toying with the technology for years, and many say it is a needed option to keep temperatures to controllable levels.

Here's another great idea the libs will love -- we can fight "global warming" by opening all our fridge doors for a few days every year. LOL!
