What a boondoggle. This thing will cost you 50% more in parts and will have a miniscule software library. The new XCode development was just announced. It will take 2 years for it to get traction and that’s too late.

Here we go again.
Spec out an equivalent, including the integrated 5K display and efficient cooling.
Go ahead.

Wow,you’re consistent.

Why say things about Apple that aren’t remotely true in this day& age? Everyone who reads these threads are tech savvy enough to know this. So why post fals3 statements like this?

Like a moth drawn to a flame, the mindless ones waste their time searching for Apple threads to impart their hatred for all things Apple. And get burnt in the process. Must be so gratifying for you.

Spec wise, you’d do well to build an equivalent machine for the same price. Software, it will run anything a current Mac will run. The New APIs are obviously (given the demos) already in the hands of some major players, and I’m sure there are some developers who are already scrambling to get some AR ideas into play so they can be available for a few Million users who will, if they can run iOS11, be able to run it when iOS is released this fall.

Was WWDC a original iPhone/iPad reveal? No. But it’s obvisous that they’ve been burning up a lot of candles. iMac Pro is top of the line now, I look forward to seeing what they do to update the Mac Pro.

5k display? You cannot use a toolbar in many programs with 4k. You cannot make bigger.
I use 1920 x 1080 screen resolution so I can easily see the buttons.
I suspect people who use 4k and now 5k create those hard to read websites with tiny fonts.

You are WRONG, as usual. I just priced out the cost to duplicate the low-end iMac Pro in a Windows PC workstation version is about $7,092.00.

See the details of the pricing here.

Another one from the Peanut Crowd (PC) ignorantly chimes in. I use a 27 nice 5K iMac at work. What you complain about is not a problem with a Mac. . . Unless you use a Windows virtual machine in it. Windows has problems with such high resolution screens and adapting windows and webpages to high-definition screens. Macs do not.

No, the Xeon family of processors is easily 15 years old, but the ones that are going into the iMac Pro are the yet to be released Intel Xeon Gold series which replace their E5 and E7 Xeons. Apple's specs show that the Xeons that will be populating the iMac Pro will using 2666MHz ECC RAM and have Turbo Boost to 4.5GHz. there are only one series that meets those criteria that have the specs, the Xeon Gold 3.2GHz 8 Core and Xeon Gold 3.0GHz 18 core. Nothing else in Intel's Xeon listing matches those specs. These will be release by Intel sometime in the next month or two.

There is a higher level of Xeon processor called the Xeon Platinum, but the speed is no higher, just the number of cores. The Platinum line starts with 20 cores and goes up from there. Some of those can set you back over $60,000 per unit.

The 18 core Xeon that the Xeon Gold being used in the top of the line iMac Pro is replacing sells for $10,800 on discount from NewEgg. Intel has yet to establish retail prices for the soon to be released Gold and Platinum Xeons.

Two years for Xcode 9? Don’t think so. It’s likely Apple will require Xcode 9 for AppStore submissions this fall.

For Apple’s ‘Pro’ markets... If the iMac Pro provides a performance improvement that helps Xcode, Final Cut, Adobe users get work done & improves profit margins... Apple will have no trouble selling new iMac Pro systems to these folks.

https://www.howtogeek.com/206710/should-you-buy-a-4k-computer-monitor/

FTA: Mac OS X deals with this better, as the scaling features that enable Retina displays on Apple’s Macs also work for 4K displays. Some applications still aren’t updated to work with this properly, but most Mac applications now support proper display scaling. Apple has also updated all the included Mac applications to look good on a high-resolution display, while Microsoft hasn’t done the same for some included Windows applications — though with Windows 10 things are much better.

Here's what TechRepublic has to say (which is very true):

As impressive as the performance of iMac Pro looks, the price could make it impractical for many professionals and businesses. Having seen past iMacs overheat, professionals will also continue to be concerned about the cooling of the iMac Pro despite Apple's WWDC assurances. In the end, a high-powered Mac tower would have likely cost less, been more modular, and attracted a lot more enterprise buyers.

Furthermore, it looks like it's going to have a very limited number of people interested at those prices:

The biggest surprise was that Apple announced a new "space gray" iMac Pro that can be configured with up to an 18-core Intel Xeon CPU, 128GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD drive. Keep in mind that the base model of this beast will feature an 8-core Xeon, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD and it will cost $4999. So, the price of the fully configured version is going to be astronomical, likely in the $8K-$10K range, when it arrives at "the end of the year."

It’s quite apparent that Apple used the Xeon processor to create most of the “wow” factor, with the processors getting “up to 11 teraflops” in processing power “starting at $5,000, but...

The Microsoft Scorpion gaming system will get 6 teraflops at about around $600. So, string a couple of Scorpions together, and you’d have around 12 teraflops at slightly more than $1,000, or 1/5th the price of the iMac Pro.

Of course Xcode9 will be out in the fall.

What takes the time is writing the applications using Xcode9.

From what I’ve seen of the feature set, Xcode9 will need the new high powered Mac’s to run properly.

Look at the size of that Touch Bar, size does matter.
