Windows XP is an operating system doggedly hanging onto life. Nearly 16 years after its launch, at least tens of thousands of XP machines remain in use.
One percent of the 4.6 million devicessmartphone and computersexamined by Duo Security were found to be running XP, with a large number of business PCs still using the OS.
Windows XP persists despite being released back in 2001, and, in most instances, Microsoft not having patched the OS to fix flaws that could be exploited by hackers since 2014.
"While support for the ancient OS ended in 2014, thousands of endpoints used in the enterprise still run on the legacy system," says Thu T. Pham in the 2017 Duo Trusted Access Report.
The statistics echo findings from a separate poll earlier this year, which found 52% of firms were still running Windows XP on at least one machine. Duo found XP remained more popular in Europe than in the US and Canada, with the OS on 2% of devices in EMEA, compared to 1% in North America. Meanwhile, other statistics estimate that XP remains especially widespread in China relative to the rest of the world.

I had to upgrade for Win 7. The PC didn’t have the speed, memory or capacity for win 7 that I used. I don’t have a XP disk anymore. I also upgraded to win 10. But I do have one win 7 disk from 2014. I did keep the machine I had before this one. It is a clunker but I need information on it. I can see why one would stay with XP or 7 for years after newer OS come out.
OK mister, you don't have to get insulting about it!
ping for later
“One percent of the 4.6 million devicessmartphone and computersexamined by Duo Security were found to be running XP”
1% but they are counting smart phones? WTH kinda stupid reporting is this?
I have a computer that is dual-booted with Windows XP and 7. Best of both worlds on one computer.
IE8 is the last supported on XP from Microsoft. Chrome and Firefox will stop support of XP before the end of the year.
Sites like banks and credit card will want the latest versions.
I use Windows 7 on my desktop pc and leave it running for weeks between restarts. I use Windows 10 on my laptop with several modifications so it is more like Windows 7. With a SSD drive it starts up to the desktop in 15 seconds.
” mother board beep indicates it finally died.”
Maybe memory. Pull out one of the memory sticks and see if it boots
Thanks - a few years ago, it took a hit that burnt out the Ethernet port so I got a USB dongle to connect. Then the wireless mouse started acting up and it wouldn’t recognize a USB mouse. I’ll check it out when I get home (been on the road for a month) but it’s probably got more issues than would make it worth repairing.
Yep, you make a good point about the (loose) connection to OS/2 versioning.
Compatibility with production hardware (like CNC machines) is a compelling argument for staying with whatever you have. Been there, for sure.
