Three new Windows 10 versions revealed for “Advanced PCs” and Servers (14 editions and counting!)
MS Power User ^ | Jun 4, 2017 | Pradeep

A few days back, Microsoft accidentally pushed out builds from their internal branches to both PC and mobile. The mobile build bricked a number of devices. Microsoft later posted an explanation on what really happened and how to recover the bricked devices. A MDL forum member has now spotted three new Windows 10 SKUs in the released Windows 10 Build 16212 pkeyconfig. The following are the three new Windows 10 versions revealed through this build,

Microsoft already offers the following Windows 10 versions,

Looks like Microsoft has now found reasons to release some more versions of Windows 10 in addition to the above. We believe the new versions are targeted towards Education and Enterprise users. Windows 10 Pro for Advanced PCs was previously believed to be called Windows 10 Pro for Workstations and will presumably have licensing and optimisations targetted to these powerful multi-core PCs with masses of RAM and petabyte hard drives.

The N editions of Windows are targeted at European Union countries and allow users to choose their own media player and software required to manage and play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media files.

Windows Server 2016 ServerRdsh would target servers used as Remote Desktop Session Host. A Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server is the server that hosts Windows-based programs or the full Windows desktop for Remote Desktop Services clients. Users can connect to an RD Session Host server to run programs, to save files, and to use network resources on that server...

I thought there was going to be only one version of Windows 10. . .

How many does this make now?

Do not want. The OS just needs to manage the hardware resources and the filesystem. The rest is all unnecessary crap.

Pretty soon there will be complaints and accusations if Microsoft doesn’t come out with a Windows 10 LGBTQIA Edition.

I'm counting 14. I suspect what Microsoft meant by "one version of Windows" was that there would be only "Windows 10". No "Windows 11" or later.

They've always had half a dozen or so different "Editions" so they can charge more for the big ones and less for the small ones, so that customers feel like they're only paying for what they'll use. I guess. I'm not a marketing type.

I stopped at Win7. Is there really anything that good in 10 that warrants the upgrade?

I’m still gonna use 7. I have no plans to “upgrade.”

I can’t believe people actually put up with this nonsense, and pay good money for the privilege.

Let us know when a version that does not force updates on you and does not spy is available. Meantime, I will buy another laptop with Win 7.

After January 14, 2020 you might get motivation when the security updates stop. Until then, enjoy!
Windows 10 isn't bad, but it is no Windows 7 either.

Yuck. Someone in product development needs to be fired. That’s insane. Which version breaks things the most?

No kidding. If I’m forced to use Windows for anything I immediately install Cygwin to regain my sanity. It’s a horrible, miserable mess of an operating system to work on, and simply doesn’t work most of the time, especially when you need to get real work done, and super-especially when you install Microsoft software on it. It’s been a hack and virus for 30 years. Horrible, horrible stuff that will drive any normal person insane.

I wouldn't say my PCs are "retarded", exactly... But I have to admit most of them have been "left back" a few times. And a few are never gonna "graduate" (to Win10) at all.

May I suggest dipping your toes into Linux. If you use legacy stuff that only runs under Wondoze, install vmplayer. This particular system I am on has about a 6 month uptime.

***I develop software for the Windoze desktop environment. My development environment runs better in a VM of 7 under Linux than any other thing I have tried. Linux is like the Rock Of Gibraltar. It is rock solid and fast.
