Vanguard 1, the 4th artificial Earth satellite (2nd US satellite) was launced into orbit March 17, 1958 and is still circling the Earth.

The first three satellites (Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 (USSR) and Explorer 1 (US) no longer remain in orbit.
Operational?.....................
Mispelling (launced=launched)
Launched on my 11th bday.Remember looking at Echo 1 balloon going over.
Yeah, I know, Telstar 1...Still remember watching limited, overseas relays from the top of its orbit.
Stopped transmitting in 1964
One of the first uses of solar cells as power source

(Perhaps I’m a Russian sleeper agent who was triggered into voting for Trump by this Russian election interference tactic of orbiting a satellite around the Earth in 1957!)
I am privileged to know a retired Bell Lab engineer who designed the spiral antenna on the Telstar satellite.
LOL!
