Vanguard 1 Still In Orbit (launced March 17, 1958)

Vanguard 1, the 4th artificial Earth satellite (2nd US satellite) was launced into orbit March 17, 1958 and is still circling the Earth.

The first three satellites (Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 (USSR) and Explorer 1 (US) no longer remain in orbit.

My Dad pointing out Sputnik 1 as if flew overhead one evening. You could see this shining dot moving across the sky, illuminated by the just setting sun.

(Perhaps I’m a Russian sleeper agent who was triggered into voting for Trump by this Russian election interference tactic of orbiting a satellite around the Earth in 1957!)

I am privileged to know a retired Bell Lab engineer who designed the spiral antenna on the Telstar satellite.
