After so many years, I recently closed down my FB account. Too many people, good or nominal to begin with, become total %&*@!%&^ on social media. Its the computer anonymity, I believe, in many cases. That said, I now have three relatives I am no longer on speaking terms - and why? Because they could not keep their petty insults in check. Few people in FB are ever persuaded by logical arguments and polite discourse.
Never fell into that syndrome. Never joined Twitter either. I sometimes post to news articles that allow a Google log-in, but I don’t use Google for anything else. I use Bing for my search engine because I earn reward points that I can get gift cards with.
I got rid of Facebook the day after Obama won reelection.
I have several hundred friends and acquaintances throughout the US and Europe. We have a private Facebook group. We used it to replace our old Usenet newsgroup. It works really well. It allows us to filter out the Usenet trolls and continue our friendships from a distance.
I also have a private family group, one for a local scooter group, and another for a special interest group from another Usenet legacy.
Facebook is excellent for that purpose. We took a look at Google+ and some of the other social media offerings, but none of them show much promise.
I’ll stick with Facebook for those purposes.
Never had one. But I did open an Instagram account before the POS suckaburg bought it.
Facebook seems to be popular with goodlooking people who post many selfies.
I quit some 8-10 years ago as Facebook was selling INFO to Insurance companies that used to come from Equifax.
I never really got started. I only signed up, under a nom de plume, to get access to some closed groups.
But then, never really did much with it. Was there during the latest FR outage and hated it.
Only adults who are communist sympathizers use facebook...
The reasons to leave Facebook are numerous, the reasons to remain are few.
Don’t.
When something is free you may find YOU are the product...
Pass.
Me too. Closed yesterday.
I am also one of the ‘never started’ ones - no account ever created there for many reasons stated here. And as some have said, go there mostly when FR is down or followed a link to read something from a story there. Or a business site. I am not much of a poster anyway. Very private and usually quiet person. I can say I do go through major withdrawals when FR is down!
She has sincere, deep beliefs, based on what she's experienced in life and what she's learned. If she can't respect that my views are at least as deeply thought out, based on life experience, and as important to me as hers are to her, she doesn't respect my integrity.
I don't think it's trivial at all. Why would I trust anyone who doesn't respect what I believe?
I joined Facebook right after my mother's funeral. I was amazed and pleased how many of my high school and street “homies” came to her funeral. My parents had a big yard for my little WV town. Our yard was kid's sports central! We played every sport imaginable in that yard and a few unimaginable. My mother would come out and bring us water, lemonade, etc. Dad would come out and give his 2 cents in “coaching”. Everyone remembered that! I was quite touched that all who were still local were there. So I now use Facebook to keep in touch with them.
Now as I near retirement I might move back there. My wife is not too keen on the idea. She's a sort of “big city” girl, grew up near Philadelphia. I could go back there, I have simple requirements, books to read (already got most of them!), local gym (several commercial plus community center gyms are now there!) to work out in & now do “old people” martial arts.
I have simple needs but complicated thoughts! They don't need much space!
Excellent Point!! Most certainly. I believe wholeheartedly the person is the product it is selling. Many stores have also turned to selling ‘data’ of their customer sells as a very profitable part of their business. Have to wonder which of store’s products (personal data or merchandise) is more profitable.
I have a sister in law who puts nothing on FB except liberal crap. I friended her because I wanted news about them and photos. But no, nothing of the sort just Trump insults. Disappointing.
I got rid of Facebook the day after Obama won reelection.
So did I. In the last few weeks of the election I blitzkrieged Facebook hour after hour with Anti-Hillary articles/photos/whatever. After we won I stopped the battle.
I changed my outlook regarding Fakebook.
Mine is all Politics, all the time.
Don’t want to be my Friend because of it, you just outed yourself as intentionally Ignorant or an America hating Leftist, whether you are aware of it or not.
I warn anyone who sends me a Friend request that they should check out what’s on my Page and rethink their request. Enter at your own risk.
No more moderating. I used to hold off replying to people I disagreed with Politically to keep the peace, but no more.
Don’t like what I have to say, piss up a rope and unfriend me. But hey, that’s just me.
You use your Enemy’s weapons against them, just like the Jihadists are known to do.
I don’t think people realize how much information is sucked off their account, e.g., health information, banking, political affiliation, even psychological characteristics. Anyone concerned about privacy would never have an account.
