Wonderful and informative discussion thread on the historically-accurate and varied guns in AMC's current tv series "The Son."

For example:

"....hello all I was the armorer on THE SON. The Lewis gun was Adopted buy Belgium in 1912 and the British soon after so its use in 1915 not a stretch. Eli's Pistol is a 1911 Colt 45 ACP, it is a true repo of a 1911 (Cimarron WILD BUNCH 1911) not a 1911 A1 which wasn't introduced till 1921 .. The extended 351cal 1907 WIN SLR mags are 10 rounders. In eps 5 Sally holds Pete's 1st Model Hand Ejector in 44 spl. Neptune does in fact carry a C96 "Broomhandle" Mauser. The leader of the Sedicioso's carried a 6in Navy Luger . We also had Krag 30-40 rifles and Carbines a couple of 1895 Winchesters 30-40(Texas Ranger favorite) and 03 Springfields, 87,97 W and model 12 Winchester pump shotguns. Phineas carries a 1903 Colt Pocket model in a shoulder holster,380 cal. At the start of the Honey hunt he carries a Remington Model 8 in 35 rem with a period Lyman peep sight. There are also several early model Colt Police Positive And S&W Hand Ejector 38 spl Double Action revolvers in the 1915 time line. The Sheriff carried a Colt New Service 45 Colt. Pedro Garcia Carries a Nickel S&W Schofield revolver in 45 colt.

i'll do the 1849 weapons in my next post."

AMC's tv series "The Son" deals with Texas history through the lens of one family from 1849 through 1915 (and perhaps beyond; only first season has shown so far). In particular, the guns are prominently shown and appear history-appropriate and as varied as they were then, from flintlocks to lever-action 30-30's to semi-auto broomhandle Mausers and 1911's to a Lewis machine gun (as mentioned in NetFlix's post WW1 "Peaky Blinders"). I saw an obvious Winchester that resembles my model 63 (22LR) but clearly was a larger caliber with a detachable magazine, now identifed as a .351 model. I went searching for info on this gun and others in the series and came across a wonderful forum entry on (who'd a thunk it, a New York gun forum), and one of the major posters there on this thread identifies himself as the armorer for the series. And he lists all kinds of cool info on the different weapons used in the series. Very enjoyable and educational material. I thought I'd share with y'all.

I love the series.

And I am glad that the producers, developers of the series took the time to utilize a firearm expert in getting it right for all of us that it matters to.

I recommend this great book for background on events of those early times.

The author took the time to get the firearms carried and used by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer correctly.

Frank Hamer, below right, poses with dead raiders at the Norias Ranch near Kingsville, Texas, on August 9, 1915. The Ranger on the left appears to be Jim Dunaway. They are holding the captured battle flag between them. This battle was among those fought on American soil during the Mexican Revolution.

still watching it but I agree, it is tolerable for me mostly for the historic look (although I am not sure there were many lights or electricity in south Texas in 1915) a bit surprised it picked up a second season.

Really? I hadn't heard that. To each his own, I guess.
