No science fiction franchise has been more influential than Star Wars. (Sorry, Star Trek fans!) Over the last 40 years, the space opera saga created by George Lucas has delivered 1,062 minutes of lightsaber duels, intergalactic dogfights and dynastic drama. Even non-fans are likely to immediately recognize iconic imagery like Darth Vaders helmet, the Millennium Falcon, or Luke Skywalkers lightsaber. Which begs the question: of the hundreds, maybe thousands, to choose from which Star Wars moments are the best?
The series, now owned by Disney, turns 40 on May 25. So TIME's entertainment team and sundry Star Wars super fans on staff ranked the top 40 scenes. We included only moments from the original trilogy, the prequels, The Force Awakens and Rogue One. (The 1978 Holiday Special not so much.) This list was debated at length. What did we miss?

“I have no idea which episodes they were.”
My kids like most of them. And I’ve seen all of them, and will rewatched the first two or three. Although I can’t ever keep them straight.
“Do you want to watch Episode VI of Star Wars dad?”
“Nah - go ahead. But I wouldn’t mind watching one of the first ones that came out when you get to it.”
“DAD - that IS the first one that came out.”
I usually refer to them as the one on the ice planet, the one with those little furry guys (the air scooters in the forest are cool!), the one with Princess Leia in her skimpy outfit with the fat slob monster - etc. I liked the racing scene with the pod racers (near the middle of the episodes) when they first come across that little blond kid. (I think that’s Luke!!???)
My kids get so frustrated with me when we watch it. “So that guy grows up to be Darth Vader!?”. They have the story lines and characters all figured out. I’m just there for the short-term entertainment.
“I’m Lando Callrisian”...
Personally, I enjoyed Ice Pirates, a silly fun space adventure.
I saw it in Spanish while riding a bus from Santiago to Concepción.
The response from the passengers was basically "Que es este?"
Gotta be, ...
“NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!”
To be fair, Lucas really couldn’t let Spielberg or Cameron direct due to his not being a member of the Screenactors Guild and in fact banned from that organization.
But yeah, I see your point. And honestly, I have some more... outrage towards Lucas for something he pulled, which was essentially tricking his entire audience into rooting for the Vietcong via the Rebels and Ewoks and root against America via the Empire. I’ll never forgive him for that.
Best Star Wars moments: All of the first movie, some of the second movie, a little bit of the third movie....
>>the response from the passengers was basically “Que es este?”<<
I wasn’t there but I assume the response in Mexico was more like “GABRONE!! ??Qual es esta pinche madre??”
;)
That's a good one. Yeah, his get up looked like he was a little kid dressing up as his hero. Or maybe he doesn't get the same top salary as Vader sooo...he had to cobble together what he could around a miniaturized voice synthesizer. A good effort for a Halloween costume.
If a movie is not worth seeing while high on pot, it is not worth seeing!
“They startle easily, but they’ll be back, and in greater numbers”.
Why does every one bag on the Ewok Christmas specials?
So they sucked. Most things suck nowadays.
At least they had cute stuffed animals in it, and Christmas.
Damnation Alley was awesome!
I was 12. I immediately tried to make the movie’s vehicle out of Legos afterwards.
You must have cut class that day during “Alien Biology” and are thinking in Earthling terms.
What I wouldn’t give for the entire SW phenomenon to drop off the face of the Earth.
