We Ranked the 40 Greatest Star Wars Moments
Time ^ | May 23, 2017 | Eliana Dockterman, Alex Fitzpatrick, Megan McCluskey, Matt Vella

No science fiction franchise has been more influential than Star Wars. (Sorry, Star Trek fans!) Over the last 40 years, the space opera saga created by George Lucas has delivered 1,062 minutes of lightsaber duels, intergalactic dogfights and dynastic drama. Even non-fans are likely to immediately recognize iconic imagery like Darth Vader’s helmet, the Millennium Falcon, or Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. Which begs the question: of the hundreds, maybe thousands, to choose from which Star Wars moments are the best?

The series, now owned by Disney, turns 40 on May 25. So TIME's entertainment team and sundry Star Wars super fans on staff ranked the top 40 scenes. We included only moments from the original trilogy, the prequels, The Force Awakens and Rogue One. (The 1978 Holiday Special not so much.) This list was debated at length. What did we miss?

I think “Let the Wookie win” should have been included somewhere.

>>The 1978 Holiday Special not so much.
Hey, if you watch it with the RiffTrax commentary, the Holiday Special is a lot of fun! <<

That Special was so bad it has passed into legendary status. Rumor is Lucas tried to buy every copy in existence so he could destroy them all (he failed).

It is a MUST WATCH!

The Jedi doofuses drop their light sabers about 40 times. An elegant weapon my ass.

The first two were really fun. I have no idea which episodes they were. Return of the Jedi started out OK but then ran into the Ewok idiocy.

All the rest were OK except the latest one (I think it is the latest one) where the Black storm trooper has blood on his helmet. That one just died.

I have a a review I write that clearly explains why VII sucked and how it is just a copy of IV if you would care for me to post it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that right away. The plot and the characters are the same in both films.

Teen squeaking out a living on a desert planet encounters a small 'droid that holds some super secret plans that the Big Galactic Evil wants badly...and on and on and on. Very bad. And not even camouflaged at all.

What did we miss?

The moment Luke realized Leia was his sister, thinking back to the kiss she gave him, and understanding that the Force could not reveal everything in life to him.

I always felt that, except for Lando Calrissian, whenever they put a black person in a significant role, it always felt like they were trying to put a black person in a significant role.

I only saw two or three. My best moment was seeing the effect of going to light speed.

“40 seems like an awfully high number for “greatest” moments.”

Let’s rank the 1000 greatest moments of Star Wars...(Sorry Star Trek). Beam me up Scotty.

I enjoyed the first one. It was different, and seemed right for the time. The second one was...not bad, a good follow up to the first one.

The next one...eh.

After that, eh...eh...ugh.

I lost interest. I just went back and watched the one with the Ewoks in it, and Princess Leia in the leather bathing suit was great, but...it was just too campy.

Star Wars was a good movie to see with a nice pot buzz. Alien, not so much. When that critter blew out of that egg, I jumped about a foot out of my seat...
Har, I laugh NOW..

No science fiction franchise has been more influential than Star Wars.

What absolute rubbish. Probably no major sci-fi money maker has contributed less to the genre. Take away ALL of the iconography of Star Wars

and science fiction wouldn't be the least bit affected or the poorer for it.

Let’s not forget two horrible Ewok made for TV movies! Written for the average 6 year old mind.

I slept with the light on for a week after seeing “Alien”.
