No science fiction franchise has been more influential than Star Wars. (Sorry, Star Trek fans!) Over the last 40 years, the space opera saga created by George Lucas has delivered 1,062 minutes of lightsaber duels, intergalactic dogfights and dynastic drama. Even non-fans are likely to immediately recognize iconic imagery like Darth Vaders helmet, the Millennium Falcon, or Luke Skywalkers lightsaber. Which begs the question: of the hundreds, maybe thousands, to choose from which Star Wars moments are the best?
The series, now owned by Disney, turns 40 on May 25. So TIME's entertainment team and sundry Star Wars super fans on staff ranked the top 40 scenes. We included only moments from the original trilogy, the prequels, The Force Awakens and Rogue One. (The 1978 Holiday Special not so much.) This list was debated at length. What did we miss?

>>Teen squeaking out a living on a desert planet encounters a small ‘droid that holds some super secret plans that the Big Galactic Evil wants badly...and on and on and on. Very bad. And not even camouflaged at all.<<
Well heck your review is more concise than mine. But I spent a LOT of words pounding the similarities.
In my version, the villain is Darth Rem Stimpy — plain wrap Dart Vader.
I always thought that the Princess was damaged goods after she entertained Jabba the Hut
I would have just assumed that Jabba raped her but he did not seem to have any sex organs.

I am altering the deal....Pray I don't alter it any further.
I believe I saw those when I was 6 years old. I don't remember much caring for them. I mean, come on--where the hell's Luke or Han or the Millenium Falcon?
Heh, I heard that! (It’s only a movie, It’s only a movie...) Sure was a ripper of a flick!
Disney buying pump and dump advertising on what should be a blue chip investment. So very sad.
This whole thread “is a trap”
That is true of every movie and TV series of the last 30+ years.
Does everyone realize how many video/movie black presidents we had before Hussein appeared out of nowhere?
Total Fail is an understatement!
The “I’m your father, Luke” scene. Nothing else comes close.
While Disney bought Star Wars for 4 billion they didn’t get everything. The one thing still owned and controlled by Fox is the right to show theatrically the movies they originally distributed. That isn’t a big concern but any original movie marathon shown in a movie theatre has to get permission from Fox still.
How about “Damnation Alley”? (Which was supposed to be the BIG studio sci-fi hit of 1977...were it not for this upstart film by some guy named Lucas....)
I saw that one, too!
These aren’t the moments you’re looking for.
#41 Seeing the Ewoks for the first time. Oh Joy, Rapture!
“40 seems like an awfully high number for greatest moments.”
They picked 40 because this week is the 40th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars.
