I have been aware of the serious effect an EMP attack would have on our country for some time. I recently read a most terrifying book, One Second After, and am now motivated to better prepare my family for this possibility. My question regards the viability of a 1987 Toyota 4x4 truck with a 22r carbureted engine. I have been told there is a vulnerable component in the non electronic ignition system. My understanding was that old coil, distributor system was safe.
I have the opportunity to purchase this vehicle and would like to be sure that it can be counted on if needed.
There have been a lot of good responses in this thread but it bears repeating...
there is likely one and possibly 3 nations capable of delivering a successful emp strike on conus that would have widespread effect...and if that happens it will simply be the precursor to sveral thousand more nuclear detonations
as far as the electric grid being hardened...don’t kid yourself. I have personal involvement in what is being done to protect some of it and emp is not anywhere near the top of the list of things that are considered as threats
if you want something more realistic to worry about do some reading about the vulnerability of much of our infrastructure to coordinated cyber attacks. 1000x more likely than emp and without the downside of immediate overwhelming nuclear response that would accompany any even unseccesful attempt to hemp the US
Lastly, Forstchen and his cohorts wrote that book in hopes of some FUD creating some grants for “research”
EMP sends out a wave of electromagnetic energy (four waves, actually) and this wave induces electric current in wires.
Pass a wire through a magnetic field and current is induced. This is how a generator works. But with EMP, the wire is fixed and the magnetic wave is moving. Imagine how much current would be induced in a 100-mile long power line. Now, how much current would be induced in the half-inch wire between the battery and the processor in your quartz watch? Nobody can say for certain.
Dear matthew,
The F-4 is not a ‘tube-driven’ avionics package.
Solid state avionics was present in the Phantom II E-series avionics package, which came out in the late 60’s.

Dear CodeToad,
I read that in a military scientific report, in 1977.
I also read that it could switch the polarity, so again, nothing runs.
I guess for you to prove me wrong, would have ol’ Nork Fatboy let one loose on us all, no?
CME - Corona Mass Ejections are the nearest thing to EMPs that we have experienced. That being said there was a CME in 1857 that could be said to be the “model” of a hostile EMP attack. It was powerful enough to induce telegraph line to ground sparking, temporarily knock out telegraph communication and electrocute some telegraph operators (As near as I can tell from the accounts I have read none were killed!).
We're all just speculating here, but it would seem to me, that the level of chaos and disruption immediately following an EMP attack of the sort described, would make such a trip impossible.
Running that gauntlet would be a suicide mission, in my estimation.

o Metal structures are NOT protected, like barns. Any crack, open door or window, opening, defeats protection.
o Lightening is coventional. EMP is nuclear. The difference is a million times.
o IIRC there are 3 types of pulses of various duration and power, depending on the nuclear parameters.
o Apparently Uncle Sam will not publish hard useful data.
o You cannot ‘harden’ your toys, they would leak. You CAN store a later model motorbike, plus toys, store them in a diy faraday cage, like chicken wire, in your garage. Max hole size TBD. NO openings. Sealed means electrical soldered or welded. Door sold electrical contact.
o Electrical survives eg wires, alternators. High resistance, & capacity.
o Electronic dies, low resistances, and small cross sectional areas.

“If an EMP takes us out, a disabled car will be the least of your problems.”
Yes there will be mass pandemonium when people realize their phones can no longer connect to facebook! :-)
EMP = Y2K
I read the book as well. Great book and lots to think about for the event if it should happen. He lived in the rural outskirts of the town in the hills. He talks about getting insulin first for his daughter, he kept it in the toilet tank to keep it cold. Get several pairs of hiking boots. Thousands of people walking the roads, towns, cities.
They protected the small town nearby that had cows, food supply. Rationed the food and kept insiders out and rationed the food. How the wildlife like deer, rabbit, turkeys, birds were all killed off by hunting as months and year went by. In the book he ends up having to kill his dog for protein for his dying daughter. Ammo was sold for food.
Lot of things to think about should the shtf.
I’ve read Forstchen’s stuff since before high school. I was a huge fan of his “Wing Commander” books. I’m still convinced the first two at least would make awesome films.
The Hiroshima bomb was nothing like we have today. The packages we deliver today are 1000 times more powerful. And while it was one bomb, we are capable of sending 1000’s from land base, sea base, or air. The impact of the attack will be devastating to everything reasonably close and the nuclear winter that follows will kill every growing thing on earth plant and ultimately animal.

You are likely correct, my knowledge on the subject is limited to what I read in the Tom Clancy/ Dan Brown novels. However, I can assure you from personal experience our B-52s and some of the Navy’s ships of the mid/late 60’s did utilize tube type Cryptographic gear.
Why not just build a Faraday cage into your garage? Or your whole house for that matter, if you’re that concerned about it?
Terry L Smith...
You have no clue, and sadly, you have no clue you have no clue.
Some time back, Quebec Hydro had their system taken down via CME. No power for many days. Quite a few larger transformers fried and switching electronics/protection devices had to be replaced.
Quite sure that truck has electronic ignition components that would be affected by EMP.
