The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Got another bed of taters planted, and some corn. Stowells Evergreen-older seed so it may not germinate.
I replaced some rotten boards around my raised beds with concrete blocks, which allows for some additional depth, and I thought that the small spaces in the blocks would be nice for the beneficial flowers and/or herbs.
I have to post and run - busy weekend, so I'll likely not be able to post much till Tuesday. Hope all of you are doing well. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

In before the ping. LOL Speaking of cold, I’ve been researching small wood stoves that could be set up in case of emergency to knock the chill off the basement and/or heat the green house when we get it.
Looking at some of the neat marine stoves that can also be used for cooking. One even has an additional stackable unit to add an oven.
We have 2 fireplaces upstairs, but worry that the basement plumbing might freeze, since the water closet for the whole house is on the walk-out end of the basement, and faces in a Northerly direction.
The winds of the past week have subsided but we had showers last night and today. I still have to apply some steer manure and spade the patch where the corn is going. I may have a few photos later...
I live in a mobile home, and the pipes go underneath. Now that it is spring, I need to get under there and wrap them.
Is it Friday, already? I had a LOVELY day here in Southern Wisconsin. I weeded all of the beds (that had been previously tilled) and put down straw and made the final decisions on, ‘who goes where’ based on sunshine and growth habit.
It’s looking really GOOD for me - I may be able to get my garden planted before the END of May or the first part of June!
Of course, this is the FIRST Spring I’ve spent with lots of garden beds and not managing a Garden Center in the Spring!
I feel for everyone - Mother’s Day Weekend sucks if you’re in Retail. Do your fellow man a FAVOR and stay the heck OUT of the Garden Centers this weekend, LOL!
Here in Sydney Maine...it’s been cool but I work a perennial farm (we supply the big retailers up here) the plants look GREAT but its been kinda grey... with a few days sunny and nice. I wouldn’t say it’s been cold but rather a good winter with snow cover and a nice wet Spring. Personally I put some nice Cardinal flowers between my conical evergreens and a few bleeding hearts in a big ceramic bowl on the corner of our porch(porches) that face the road....chestnuts are rooted from seed in two good spots... I have to say i have access to things most do not and I am a novice but learning from a couple that have been living off of their 100 acre tract of land and been selling their perennials since 82’......Zone 4 perennials. The couple are vegetarians and grow all their own chow...3 wells / to be blunt they are self supportive with food/timber/water etc... and great people in general....I lucked out crossing their path 2 years ago....no droughts this year huh?

A six hour drive, but lovely home in the mountains.
Today was warm and sunny, so I planted a bunch of starts outside in the bucket farm - sugar snap peas, radishes, carrots, green onion. Now that I have room in the tiny patio greenhouse, I’ll start some more in there.
This new fascination with growing and sprouting things is keeping me away from the fix and repair daily on this fixer-upper house - a good-news-bad-news sort of thing.
Ooooo, the tiny stoves! I have a page bookmarked to one place that sells them. I want one for my little shed - but the cost is a bit of a downer. Installation is about triple the cost of the stove - around here anyway.

We finally got Black Kow distribution in my area, YEA! So, that is getting turned into my garden this spring. Along with chicken coop clean out and peat.
Most of my stuff (seed) gets put in next week, and plants wait until May 31. Grampys rule.
The bad news is had a borer in the peach tree. No peaches this year. BikerTrash sad!
The good news is I found his hole and pumped poison into his stupid face with a hypo until he turned to jelly and oozed out...tree recovering nicely.
I would strongly recommend Lopi stoves and inserts for your fireplace.
We’ve had this brand of stove in other states and our son has an insert at his place in Seattle.

I got some weeds pulled, but that was about it for gardening this week. All my focus is still on my chickies.
This week, one of them discovered what her wings are for. I was giving them treats in the brooder, and she flew up and perched on the edge next to me. Needless to say, I found a way to cover that brooder in a hurry! I thought I’d have at least another week before they’d need a cover over it.
And the treats I gave them? Japanese beetle grubs, dug out of my back yard. I found more than 20 of them in a little 2 square foot area. Not a good sign! I hope those chickies like the taste.
I start my corn in the green house and transplant to the garden near the end of May here on Humboldt Bay...
Yes, hardly making it to 60, and thus have not planted anything (butternut squash and tomatoes) that are growing in cups. Ground is cold. But they say Tues-Thurs going from 70 to 84, then down to 65. Thank God.
My herbs, cukes, and tomatoes are acclimating right now.
