Another half-million Americans cut the cord last quarter
Recode ^ | May 3, 2017 | Peter Kafka

The pay TV business used to deny that cord-cutting was a thing. It doesn’t make that argument any more.

Related: The pay TV business just posted a historically horrible number, at least in terms of subscribers, by losing 762,000 customers in the first three months of 2017.

That estimate comes from MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett, one of those people who used to be skeptical about cord-cutting but became a believer a few years ago. He says the industry just had its worst Q1 ever.

But are you really "cutting the cord"?

"cutting the cord" means not paying for tv content, nothing to do with internet.

Exactly! I remember when I got rid of the landline. Thought I’d save money. Ha! Jokes on me. The cable company will end up raising internet monthly fees that will make cable rates look reasonable.

Yeah it’s a shame that so many use TV as a babysitter. Getting rid of TV sounds like a fantastic idea. :D

TCM started a new pay service called Filmstruck. It’s $6.99 a month basic service, $10.99 for expanded service or $99 a year. It available on many platforms.

How much is your internet costs? Soon to be 150+ a month. Watch! It’s on it’s way. Cable companies will not let things stay this way for long.

I recently cut the cable and subscribed to Play Station Vue. I think that it is the best streaming service available. Works best with an Amazon Fire TV Stick. The fast forward function did not work well with a Roku but works great with the Amazon Fire TV Stick. The service has a DVR type function where your saved programs are stored in the cloud for later playback. It is possible to fast forward through commercials for saved programs. I get all the channels I want (about 45), including Fox News, for $30/mo.

What alternatives are there to cable or satellite?

I'm wanting to follow suit but I'm not sure what are the correct steps.

Can someone who has gone solely internet please explain what they are using to watch tv shows?

Are you able to watch live sports like college football & basketball?

Pay TV has to “unbundle” and go al la carte or die.

The original cable TV model was commercial free, the theory being that the broadcasters were being paid by the consumers, rather than by advertisers.

The older, terrestrial broadcast business model was reversed, with the advertisers bearing the cost - therefore, the consumers paid nothing to watch the programs.

Somewhere along the way, the cable companies got greedy, and decided to accept commercial advertising, which violated the unspoken compact with the consumers. Now they were collecting from both sides of the table.

It used to irritate me to no end, that I was paying for programming, yet still had to sit through commercials.

I have cut the cable and I use internet and antenna to watch a wide variety of TV. I pay for Playstation Vue, Netflix, and Channel Pear $48 for all three. I also get XTV, Pluto TV, and One America News.
I cannot get every sports channel I wish especially SNY out of NY but I get as much content as I want to search out. All the Nba and NHL playoff games are on the vue and a lot of sports come over the airwaves in HD. I don’t miss Directv one bit.
Right now I’m watching Prison Break live on Fox and after I will catch the end of the Rockets game.

We never had it.

I have relatives who do and whenever I visit I see enough TV to know that I don’t want cable.

There’s nothing more to watch on 100 channels than there was when there were three.

We cut the cable last week. I installed digital antennas for local stations (we get about 20) and we signed up for Sling TV. Sling gives us most of the cable channels we used to get over the internet. But it’s only $20 per month vs $100 for satellite/cable. Sling gives you a free Roku (streaming device) that we also use for Netflix and Amazon Prime. Plus, we have a wooded lot and couldn’t get high definition from our satellite dish (trees blocking access to the satellite). Now, everything is in high def.

“...by losing 762,000 customers in the first three months of 2017.”

As with Lawyers at the bottom of the ocean, it’s a start!

We don’t have dish and we don’t have cable. We have a few over-air channels, but seriously, I do NOT miss having TV 24/7. I still like having a Weather Channel, though...

We watch Netflix ‘series’ on DVD, watch second-hand DVDs from thrift stores or the Library, or are catching up on all of the ‘classic’ movies that we’ve missed along the way.

And that’s just in the WINTER months when we’re snowed in - we’re too busy the rest of the year to sit in front of a TV screen! :)
