Apple fanbois are officially sheeple. Yes, you heard. Deal with it (Merriam-Webster hates Apple?)

Offended? Go hassle Merriam-Webster, not us

Apple fanbois are officially sheeple. So says American dictionary Merriam-Webster.

The American lexicologists added the term of endearment to their tome yesterday, a mere 72 years after its first recorded use in the English language.

Helpfully, and entirely non-inflammatorily, Merriam-Webster's people gave two examples of "sheeple" being used in a sentence. The first was a fairly neutral example of a farmer being rude to his neighbours. The second... well, here it is for your amusement/enragement (delete as appropriate):

Apple's debuted a battery case for the juice-sucking iPhone – an ungainly lumpy case the sheeple will happily shell out $99 for.

A quick bit of (insert your adjectival search engine of choice)-ing reveals this neat little phrase was used by one Doug Criss of CNN in 2015.

Criss himself hadn't said anything on Twitter about being cited by the dictionary and we're not bothered enough to ring him up and ask him what he thinks. It's nearly time for elevenses, after all.

Sheeple was added to the only true dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary, years ago – it was their word of the day on 6 January 2013. Regardless, it's nice to see our colonial cousins keeping up with the mother tongue. ®

“If you for some reason feel you’ve just got to have Windows or Android, by all means, go get one. “

I got Android last year because Samsung had the best phone on the market.

Waterproof, NFC, wireless charging, best GPS and best camera.

It doesn’t support Gigabit LTE but the S8 does. When will the iPhones support it? No one knows.

You’ve got a grand future in sales and customer service for Samsung. Go for it.

But, please stop trying to stigmatize what works for me and has worked well, for decades.

My first PC was W95...my second was W98...my third was XP...my current one is a Sony running W7 (since upgraded to W10).My Sony is almost 7 years old and runs like a trooper.Office serves me well as does my single most important program,a financial app only available for Windows.

Some time ago I got an iPod for Christmas. Not a bad little machine. But it's a machine that doesn't perform any better than my Android. It now sits in a drawer, collecting dust.

I've never said,or even suggested, that Apple doesn't make good products. All I'm saying is that there's no way that they're so much better than Windows or Android as to justify its "mystical" status among some...including Rush and at least one Freeper I'm acquainted with.

Think of it this way...I'm old enough to remember, very fondly, the British Invasion of the mid 1960's.Loved the Beatles,Stones,The Who,The Yardbirds among many others.Still do love them,in fact (well, the Stones' *early* stuff at least). But never,*ever*,was I inclined to weep, scream, swoon or rush the stage when listening to them as many were back then. And to this day I cannot understand those who did.

There is very little in the Windows or Android world that approaches the hardware design and built quality of the most plebeian Apple device. Same goes for the user interface. That inspires a fair amount of appreciation, even among people who don’t quite know why they prefer Apple, they just do. And, people will pay more for it. That’s a recipe for success, rather than chasing one another to the bottom. Name a consumer desktop, laptop or cell phone that isn’t almost entirely created around parameters defined by the Apple original. That’s to be admired in my book, not disparaged.

My custom desktop looks much better with a cube full-size case than the trash can looking Macpro. And I can switch the look with another case purchase of $150 or less.

My trade isn’t in building computers but there is a multi billion dollar PC parts industry just for the enthusiasts. I doubt ham radio enthusiasts enjoy similar offering from their industry.

Firstly, I don't give a rat's arse what the rats of this world say.
Secondly, I am offended by “sheeple”. Using the first three letters that spells “she” that then makes up a word that describes people as brainless followers is sexist and mysogynist. ; )

Like Moths drawn to the light, so some non-Apple users are irresistibly drawn to Apple threads. They mindlessly don’t know why they are attracted to the light — they just are compelled to fly to the light & randomly flutter around it.

Enjoy your mindless fluttering.

Apple is like Islam

it’s the radicalism that is the problem...

The other problems in both group about 98% percent of the followers are radical

There is no computer but Apple and Steve Jobs is its profit.....Apple Akbar!!!

There’s a lot of FReepers who appreciate what he posts. If Swordmaker wants to specialize in it, and does so tastefully, and hundreds of others want him to, then why do you obsess with demeaning him? At least he understands punctuation.

I’m curious when dictionaries pick up Trumpisms like “bigly”.

LOL! If this is an "Apple thread" I would hate to see what an "anti-Apple thread" looked like!

You're gonna love this.

"Bigly" is already an accepted dictionary word. It's an adverb meaning "in a big way", "hugely". It's been around since the 1400's.

Obsessing? Ha,hardly! Demeaning? Sounds like the kind of word a DUmpster Kid would use.

This is,basically,a political website. The typical Freeper comes here to discuss politics and social issues.Just as surely I know of,and occasionally visit, websites that focus on diesel automobiles there are websites geared toward Apple (or Microsoft...or Android) geeks.About 99% of *my* posts here are connected to politics or society...the other 1% are connected to music, film and, yes, diesel automobiles.

Free Republic is no more a place for discussing Apple than bimmerfest.com or mbworld.org (sites that I visit regularly) are sites for the discussion of politics.

At least he understands punctuation.

And I,OTOH,understand the basic mission statement of Free Republic,as stated at the top the its "front page":

"Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it". Hoo-yah!

> ...if this is an Apple thread...

As the FReeper who posted this thread, let me say without hesitation or fear of contradiction, that this is, indeed, an "Apple thread".

The fact that I manage the Windows Ping List notwithstanding.

Which is why my first comment on the thread was to ping Swordmaker, as the manager of the Apple Ping List.

GSC, let me respectfully suggest that you look up the "List of Ping Lists" sometime, and get a handle on the incredible breadth of topics that are part of FreeRepublic.

If you don't know what I mean, say so, and I'll send you a link to the (unfortunately many years old) List of Lists.

FReepers come here not just to discuss politics and society -- this is a wonderful, mostly polite, mostly sane, family friendly forum. And that's a rarity on today's Internet. FReepers come here to discuss all manner of things, in a climate of shared respect.

Tophat,in about a dozen words you've beautifully made the central point that I failed to make in several hundred words. And you made it using a political analogy in keeping with FR's basic mission statement!
