FULL TITLE: Angry United Airlines pilots' union issue statement denying ALL responsibility for forcible removal of doctor last week and say Chicago cops are to blame

The United Airline's pilots union released a statement on Thursday regarding Dr. David Dao's violent removal from Flight 3411 originating out of Chicago on Sunday.

The union contended that the Chicago Department of Aviation's 'grossly inappropriate response' was to blame for the events that transpired, according to the United Master Executive Council's statement.

The United Master Executive Council represents the airline's 12,500 pilots.

The statement also pointed out that the plane from which Dr. Dao was ejected was one of which that was separately owned and operated by Republic Airlines.

The crew must be looking at legal bills

I'm wondering about the flight attendants. They didn't stop a situation that traumatized passengers who were ready for the flight to begin. They didn't call the real police when airport security thugs beat up a passenger in their charge. I thought the flight crew is responsible for the safety and well-being of the passengers.

This isn't going away. It just might be a pivotal moment. We've been reduced to slavery by the corporate elite. Dr. Dao is someone who had the guts to say ENOUGH!! In 1955, Rosa Parks refused to take a seat in the back of the bus. (at least she was offered an alternative seat). She's the symbol for demands for equality. Is Dr. Dao going to be the symbol for us "little folk" saying ENOUGH to corporate thuggery?

Yeah, I think it's potentially that huge.

The idea that “civil liberties” have any relevance in air travel is comical. Can you think of any other business transaction that requires you to go through the kind of invasive sh!t you face for a routine commercial flight?

Which isn't going to convince anybody. You book on United's website. Your ticket says United. Your bill is from United. You get United frequent flyer miles. No one will care who the sub-contractor is, it's all on United.

The pilots aren’t blamed just yet although passengers are looking at the crew differently and sometimes with a little less respect. Not everyone, but some.
The pilots are slow to get ahead of this. It will be interesting to see if the cockpit recordings have been preserved. United will settle based on this fact alone if there is something incriminating and keep them under wraps.

Nice analogy. What if that's the same day that you have purchased a ticket to go to a concert. You're seated, waiting for the concert to begin. Then someone walks up to you and says "You have to leave. We've decided that someone else needs your seat".

If UAL gets anything but the worst possible condemnation and punishment for their horrendous policy, both your example and mine would be logically okay.

Yep. Some low level manager was following company policy. He/she will have a lawsuit for wrongful termination as well.
United will pony up huge sums of cash and move on. It has to.

The pilots had nothing to do with the incidents.

The flight was Sky West not United.

Sky West is contracted by United to operate United Express.

Sky West hires and trains their own pilots and their own crews.

Sky West also runs Delta’s and Alaska’s regionals.

If it's as "huge" as you seem to think it might be, then I expect a lot of fallout from this that most airline passengers are not going to like at all. For example:

The practice of overbooking flights or bumping passengers for crew members is going to stop. This sounds like a good thing until you realize that the standard practice will be for airlines to sell you a non-refundable ticket. So if something happens and you don't show up at the gate at the appointed time, then tough luck -- the flight leaves with your seat empty or the airline puts a standby passenger in it.

I'm kind of surprised this hasn't become the standard practice already. Most passengers aren't going to like this at all.

I also think we could see the advent of a new business model where airlines get out of the coach class altogether. Instead of selling 200 tickets for $350 apiece on a flight, the airline will sell 70 tickets for $1,000 apiece and cater to a different clientele completely. The days of cramming people into airplanes should have ended long ago.

Once on the plane, the pilot has the final say. The remaining flight crew can notify the pilot of a situation, but it is the pilots decision on removal and calling security.

I believe this aircraft was actually operated by Republic with United Express colors.

Which is part of the problem. Commuter airlines pilots don’t get anything like the salary and benefits of major carriers.

You want to get promoted and fly for REAL United Airlines? Don’t make waves and don’t contradict the power crazed gate manager who is declaring he’s in charge and will write a report on you that will end your career aspirations.

After being beaten he did reboard. He did not return to his seat though. There are pictures of him appearing dazed and bloodied standing in the plane. His attorney says he has no recollection of reboarding. Understandable suffering a concussion. Bigger question is how was he allowed to get back on.

OF COURSE a ticket purchase should be non-refundable. If a passenger is afraid they may not get to take the flight (for whatever reason), it’s a perfect example of what purchasing insurance should be for.

Actually I have seen many posts around the internet that say the pilot is in charge of aircraft so pilot is responsible. Many think the man could not have been forcibly removed without pilot order. Pilots used to have complete control of aircraft, no matter what. I think after all the changes after 9/11 that is not so true any more. When in the air I am sure pilots still are in charge but on the ground I am not sure they are.
