Autistic boy ‘snack shamed’ for bringing banana bread to school, Calgary mom says
National Post (Postmedia) ^ | April 10, 2017 | Shawn Logan

A Calgary mom says her autistic son was “snack shamed” for taking banana bread to school, forced to eat in the hallway while his Grade 1 classmates ate fresh fruits and vegetables.

The mom, whom Postmedia has agreed not to identify over concerns her six-year-old son could be punished, said she recently learned he had been removed from class for the offending snack.

“They told me they only allow fresh fruits and vegetables for snack time,” she said, noting there are limited foods he will actually eat.

“He was told to sit outside of the class to eat his snack. It’s not right. He’s being punished by being made to eat by himself.”

The mom said her son is on the higher functioning side of the autism spectrum and attends regular classes at a Calgary public school despite his special needs.

But by ostracizing her child from his classmates, she feels it’s hurting his development and contributing to his growing antipathy toward school that’s manifested in recent months.

The mom said last week she met with administrators at the school and was told healthy snacks were part of the school’s learning environment.

“I was told it was part of the health curriculum or health unit, and he had to eat healthy food,” said the mother.

“I said (my son) should be in class eating with the other kids. I understand healthy eating, but you’re not going to tell me what to feed my child.”

According to the Calgary Board of Education’s nutrition policy, only “healthy food and beverage” options are sold or provided in the district’s schools, however it doesn’t apply to snacks or lunches packed for students by their parents.

I like banana bread, and feel EXACTLY the way you feel towards BB as I feel towards EVERYTHING pumpkin.

Eating a gourd? Bleah!

You cite a “typical” recipe... There are different recipes that use no added sugar or use honey...some use a mix of wheat flour and unbleached some use unbleached flour....so you use your recipe and I’ll use mine and even if we used yours, the results aren’t that unhealthy....so I still don’t get the school’s issues.

What a cruel thing to do to any child. This teacher is a sadist.

I wish that I could eat banana bread, but I’d blow up like a balloon.

There are a few cases of real autism, then a bunch of kids that just need some significant discipline. And a lot of idiot school administrators.

You’re joking, right? Perhaps you are confusing autism with ADHD. Autism has NOTHING to do with being undisciplined or just a behavioral problem. It is a terrible disorder which short of a miracle of God, cannot be controlled by medication, and at its worst, requires specialized treatment plans and special schooling. At its best, which is probably Aspergers, its victims are high functioning, but still have difficulties processing sensory stimuli.
ADHD, on the other hand, is probably frequently misdiagnosed, and often results in behavioral problems. True ADHD can be at least partially controlled by medication, and behavioral methods. Some kids who have been diagnosed with it, are actually just poorly behaved kids, as a result of poor parenting or an unusually strong willed child, or even an emotionally or physically abused child who is acting out their anger and fear as a cry for help. But the true ADHD kid, is not just an out of control brat, he is genuinely impaired.

“It isn’t about food. It is about control. Just another tool to control the population.”

You are so right. Get the kids and parents trained.

I gather even raisins are unacceptable. I think I would send my kid in with fresh cane sugar.

You are making the same mistake that so many others are. You are trying to cover kids with behavior problems with the protective blanket of the ‘spectrum’.

Kids with real autism have real problems.

‘High functioning’ kids who misbehave has parents who have bought a ‘spectrum’ diagnosis to cover their shortcomings as parents.

Refusing to eat carrots and celery isn’t a disability.

Sounds yummy, but there are some two or three ingredient variations, such as mashed bananas and dry oatmeal mixed together and baked. It makes more of a cookie-like treat, but there’s no sugar in it. But, yeah, good old fashioned banana bread has some sugar in it.
Here’s a recipe that actually IS healthy, and only has 1/2 cup of honey in it. (Has unsweetened applesauce in it, too, to make it taste sweet) :

Think about it. They want to control the conversation on every subject. Therefore, if you are on the wrong side of the subject (According to them), you are an outcast. They made up their own moral code, and expect you to fall in line. Making it impossible to follow God’s laws, if you follow theirs.

Aren’t autistic people antisocial by nature? Making them eat alone doesn’t seem like much of a punishment.

The parents have to step to the plate. There should be no “specifics” for a snack. It’s stupid.

“There are different recipes that use no added sugar or use honey...”

Well honey is just a different form of sugar, and I’ve tried banana bread without sugar, it’s pretty hard to swallow.

I have been wondering if God is going to make the price of Christianity greater here in the US in order to produce more separation between believers and unbelievers.

Removed from class, and required to sit by himself.

For banana bread.

Fire everyone involved with this decision today.

Yes, there are plenty of “self-diagnosed” “spectrum” people out there, (or diagnosed by their parents first and then an actual diagnosis obtained by doctor shopping).

At least one study has shown convincing evidence that there is a social phenomenon at work, in that diagnosis rates of autism increase in an area only after one child is diagnosed and parents in the area come into contact with them. I think it’s a mild form of Munchausen-by-proxy going on aided by the fact that changing the diagnostic criteria to a “spectrum disorder” made it easy to try to shoehorn anyone who is a little strange into the nebulous “spectrum”.

The point I’m making is that banana bread may be a bit fattening depending on how it is made but it is generally not an unhealthy food to eat!. I could just imagine the uproar at his school if the kid had brought a hostess twinkie to school...execution on the playground with blindfold and one last stick of celery to munch!(no smoking!)

Never forget that left wing inclusiveness only means you are included if you act, say and do exactly as the left demands.
